Poverty Poverty Presentation Transcript

  • Poverty in Africa By: Richie Foster
  • What is poverty?
    • Poverty is:
    • Not having enough money to take care of basic needs such as food, clothing and education
    • A social problem that people depend on their environment they find themselves in
    • Going empty with no food, clothing and no hope for the future.
  • Why is poverty such a widespread problem in Africa and can we fix it?
    • It is a problem in Africa because of:
    • War, famine and AIDS
    • We can fix this by:
    • Having the financial resources like money
    • Having the technology and knowledge
    • Realizing what we have to do
    • 2015
  • How are Africans effected by poverty?
    • 43% of children in the Sub-Saharan Africa don’t have a save, accessible drinking water.
    • Nearly 3 million children under the age of 14 are HIV positive
    • 57% of African children have an education and one in three of them will not complete school
    • For every 100 boys that go to school, only 83 girls will get to go to primary school
  • Is the Poverty rate rising or falling in Africa?
    • The poverty rate is rising because:
    • Food prices have risen in Sub-Saharan Africa
    • Fuel prices have risen in the last couple of years
    • The cost of living in developing countries have risen
  • Why did I chose this topic?
    • I chose poverty because:
    • I didn’t know a whole lot about what poverty was
    • I wanted to know why there was so much poverty in Africa
    • I wanted to know what poverty is and if it was rising or falling
    • I thought that this was an important topic.
  • What did I already know about poverty?
    • I knew that:
    • Africa has a very different lifestyle because of poverty
    • Poverty is happening even here in America.
    • Children have to get jobs to support their families living in poverty
    • Poverty is found most in developing countries.
  • What information was surprising or interesting to me?
    • Information that was surprising for me was:
    • Around 20,000 people die in Africa due to extreme poverty
    • Malaria is estimated to cause between 1.1 million-2.7 million deaths world wide every year
    • Between 12 and 14 million African children have or been orphaned by parents who have HIV
  • What questions do I have after my research?
    • Questions I have are:
    • How did living in poverty start
    • Why does Africa have the most poverty
    • What part of Africa is it happening the most
