  • 2. Why I chose this topic <ul><li>I chose this topic because it was the topic that interested me the most because I wondered how one man can do so much for a place. Also, I wanted to learn more about what, Nelson Mandela did to change Africa. </li></ul>
  • 3. What I already knew about the topic. <ul><li>I knew that, Nelson Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist and went to jail for it. Also, after the apartheid ended, he was elected president of South Africa. </li></ul>
  • 4. Essential Question <ul><li>My essential question is, Why is Nelson Mandela important to Africa? </li></ul>
  • 5. New things I have learned about Nelson Mandela <ul><li>He fought for equal rights between blacks and whites in South Africa. </li></ul><ul><li>He was anti-apartheid activist. </li></ul><ul><li>He went from being a political prisoner in the apartheid state of S. Africa, to the prime minister after its political revolution. </li></ul><ul><li>He spent most of his years in prison on Robin island. </li></ul><ul><li>He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work transforming the government of South Africa from one that was oppressive to blacks, into a multi-racial democracy. </li></ul><ul><li>During his presidency he wanted to include the white demographic in the new government of S. Africa. </li></ul>
  • 6. Information that was surprising to me <ul><li>I found that him going to jail was surprising. </li></ul><ul><li>He was the leader of the African National Congress’s armed wing. </li></ul><ul><li>He was able to change a whole country by just standing up for what he believed in. </li></ul>
  • 7. Questions I still have about this topic <ul><li>Where is Nelson Mandela now? </li></ul><ul><li>What changes did Nelson do during his presidency? </li></ul><ul><li>Were there any other problems after the apartheid? </li></ul>
