Evaluation of my Media Product Media Studies AS : Foundation Portfolio Callan Wheatcroft
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
There are many ways which my media product are both similar and different to real media products in the psychological thriller genre, these are;
Similarities : Dark, unnerving non-diegetic sound, enhanced diegetic sound, weapons, miserable dirty location, and attacker and a victim.
Differences : I used a dog on a chain to represent attacking the victim, this is not typical of the psychological thriller genre.
It is important to keep exploring with genres so that the audience doesn't become bored as we don’t want the audience to be expecting and anticipating what is going to happen next.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The media product that I have created represents lower class teenagers aged 16-21.
My media product represents them in a negative manner. They are labelled a burden on society and scum.
The film plays on current zeitgeists which is gang culture and knife crime, this is very effective on the audience as they are familiar with these problems in society, if they have read it in newspapers or been affected by gang culture and knife crime first hand, the likely hood is that they will have heard of these current problems making the experience more tense and frightening.
The generic conventions also make the experience more tense through the dark ‘yob’ like clothing, the unusual camera movements and the unnerving non-diegetic sound.

What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why?
Small British independent film companies are notorious for being good at creating psychological thriller / social realism genre films, an institution such as Film4 would probably take the film on.
It would get most of its funding from the national lottery via the British film council.
As the film probably wouldnt make enough at the box office alone, most of the money made would be made in the release of DVD`s and merchandise, very similar to films such as Adulthood and Kidulthood.
Who would be the audience for your media product?
The films main target audience would be males aged from 16-25.
The target audience I have aimed for are a cinema going audience thus boosting profits for the film.
This film isn't just one ethnicity based and would cover the every ethnicity as it doesn't offend anyone.
It is also widely known that people within that age bracket have spare money therefore making the film more financially able for them to go and watch.
This clearly shows that the film is popular amongst teenager as that was the age group we tested it on.
The ‘Mise on Scene’ is very effective in attracting the audience. The costume and actors are easily recognisable, for example – Attacker: dark tracksuit and white hat. Whilst the victim : blue jeans, beanie hat and a coat.
No equilibrium is set so it wouldn't disrupt the basic narrative of the story but it would leave lots of enigmas.
The generic conventions such as the dark wiry non-diegetc sound, the clever way we have incorporated the attack dog on a chain into the attack scene and the various camera angles, movements and shot size.
It also concentrates on the zeitgeist and the negative ideologies that the audience could relate to .
Victim is made clear. Attacker is made clear.
What have you learnt about the new technologies from the process of constructing this product.
The technologies that I have used throughout the project are as follows;
The internet for researching opening sequences such as Youtube, copyright free music websites such as Royalty Free Music Library, iMovie HD to make the final sequence, pendrives, emails for the copyrighted music we tried to get the use of and a digital recorder .
I found that the software that I used was easy to handle and understand and I found that the pendrives came in very handy when doing work at home rather than emailing work to college.
I found that the only limitations that I had came from iMovie HD as it was too simple in comparison to its rivals such as Final Cut Express.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in progression from it to the full product?
The first and most important point to be made is our vast improvement in our editing skills, the preliminary task was very jumpy and rouged whilst the final product was smooth and flowed well to every scene.
The acting in the preliminary task was not good, and the dialogue spoilt it, whilst in the final product we chose not to use dialogue and made sure that the main character was someone who was comfortable being in front of the camera, we chose to use Brecon Harrison who is currently studying performance at college.
Finally the choice of shot in the preliminary wasn’t thought through as well as we should have done, and we learnt from our mistakes so therefore in the final product we chose to use a wide variety of different camera angles, movements and sizes.
This clearly shows a marked improvement in editing as all of the feedback received says that the sequence flowed well.
Overall I feel that the project worked and progressed very well. The project ran smoothly from start to finish as both myself and Jake wanted to do well. We came across a few complications such as the much debated tripod shot when the attacker comes from out his car, we both decided to put this shot in as the sequence wouldn’t run smoothly without it. I find that the sequence that we created was very enjoyable to create and watch, the final product pleased our target audience and we have created a good piece of work that is full of enigmas, gripping and enticing to its audience.
