History<br />In 1992 the United States Environmental Protection Agency created Energy Star, a program designed to reduce energy emissions and greenhouse gases by power plants. <br />Energy Star is a voluntary labeling program designed to promote more energy efficient products. This program is estimated to have saved $14 billion in energy costs in 2006 alone.<br />
  • 3. Road to Green Computing<br />There are four main paths on the road to green computing.<br />These paths intertwine and are all vital to help the environment.<br />Green Use – Reducing the Energy Consumption of computers and use them in a environmental manner. <br />Green Disposal – refurbish and reuse old computers as well as recycling them.<br />Green Design – Designing Energy efficient components, computers, servers, and other electronic equipment.<br />Green Manufacturing – manufacturing equipment while leaving a minimal footprint.<br />

Algorithmic efficiency<br />The Efficiency of algorithms is used to describe properties of an algorithm relating to how much resources it consumes. <br />Algorithms are the base of any computing system or electronic device, each and every computer chip has a certain algorithm that allows it to complete its function.<br />Even though these chips are small, they use a lot of power. <br />

  • 7. Power Supply & Management<br />The ACPI allows control of all a computers components through the OS. This allows your computer direct control of all its systems, turning off components whenever your computer goes to sleep or hibernates. <br />Knowledge and use of identifying power-hungry components and reducing their power usage when not needed, can help the environment significantly.<br />
  • 8. Video Card & Display<br />Video cards alone take up a lot of power. They need to because they processes huge amounts of data in seconds, converting electrical impulses into other electrical impulses that a display can use.<br />
