Photo Field Observation: Manoushak Antonyan

 1. 1. A New Beginning
ManoushakAntonyan
Anthropology 121
Dr.Leanna Wolfe
October 21, 2010
2. 2. Candle at baptism
The Baptismal Candle used in baptisms is used to bring God into the ceremony. When a child is baptized, the light put on to their candle is drawn from the Easter candle. This signifies that the light of Christ's love can and will overcome the power of sin in the soul of the baptized. The light from the candle allows the baptized to become worth of the gift of salvation.
3. 3. The picture on the bottom is where the child’s clothing is put, like the undershirt, shoes, and socks. The picture on the right is the clothing that she will wear after she is baptized. When a child has gotten baptized, he/she throws the old clothing away and replaces it with new, white clothing that indicates a new beginning. White is also a sign of purity, which shows the child is pure.
4. 4. The Cross
This is the cross that the child will wear after she is baptized. The cross is put on a necklace, so that she will wear it around her neck. The cross will be for her to wear for the rest of her life.
A cross is the symbol of Christianity. Baptism is when someone gets Baptized in the name of Jesus/Christianity. That's why they use a cross.
5. 5. In this picture you can see the parents, the child, the godparents, candle holders, and the cross holder. The baptism took place at an Armenian Church called St. Peter Apostolic Church. As you can see, everyone is dressed up formal for the ceremony.
During the ceremony, they all walked together down the aisle, approaching the priest. The family is happy to have their child baptized. This is a significant time of a child’s life.
6. 6. In this picture the priest is saying his prayers and singing them too. I didn’t quite understand everything he was saying, but I felt like I was part of the whole process.
The bottom picture here shows the family and the priest bowing down to their God. They do this because they believe that God can bless the child through this process.
7. 7. This is a very significant picture. This is where the child gets Baptized. The priest washes her with the holy water and then makes a cross on her forehead with the holy oil. He also sings more prayers, recognizing the child as a Christian. As you can see, the mother and father are involved in the process and the mother is very happy to see her child get baptized. After she has become baptized, she is taken inside where she changes into her new clothes and comes back to continue the ceremony, as a Christian.
8. 8. When the child is done getting dressed, she then comes back to the priest and they walk around the saints statute and the priest says his concluding prayers.
Since the child was washed in Holy water, she is not allowed to be kissed until the next day.
From the moment of baptism forward, the baptized is new unto God in that they carry with them the supernatural life of Christ.
9. 9. The Celebration
These pictures are taken at the banquet hall, where the celebration is taken place. All of their family and friends are invited to join them in celebration of their daughters Christening.
The celebration includes music, food, drinks, and a lot of dancing. This is a time to party and have fun with the ones you love.
