  1. 1. Technology and Me A personal timeline of educational technology __________ ETEC 442 – Summer 2008 Professor: Dr. Ellen Hoffman Student: Ky Nguyen

Overview <ul><li>My name is Ky Nguyen </li></ul><ul><li>I started school in the 1980s in Vietnam. </li></ul><ul><li>I graduated from high school in 1997 in Vietnam and went straight to college at Hanoi University (HANU) that same year. </li></ul><ul><li>I got my BA degree in English in 2001 and started working as a teacher at HANU until 2006, when I came to Hawaii for the MA program in Second Language Studies at UH Manoa. </li></ul>

Overview (continued) <ul><li>I am currently an instructor at the University of Hawaii English Language Program (HELP) </li></ul><ul><li>When I finish my MA program, I will come back and teach at HANU. </li></ul><ul><li>After a few years, I hope to set up my own language school and ESL teacher training facility in Hanoi. </li></ul>I also want to come back to UH for a PhD degree sometime in the future.

My definition of educational technology Educational technology is the systematic application of technological inventions (e.g., computers, software, the internet, audio-visual equipment, etc.) in combination with pedagogical theories to facilitate and enhance teaching and learning activities both inside and out of the classroom.

  6. 6. Kindergarten technology <ul><li>No computer in Vietnam in the early 1980s </li></ul><ul><li>Only rich families have radio-cassette players and TVs, mostly black and white </li></ul><ul><li>No technology at school at all: only black board and chalk! </li></ul>
  7. 7. High school technology (Vietnam) <ul><li>In mid 1990s, affluent families began to have PCs with floppy disks (the real floppy ones) </li></ul><ul><li>Only 1 computer in my school office; only for office use. </li></ul><ul><li>No internet. </li></ul>

College technology (Vietnam) <ul><li>I bought my first PC – an HP Pentium II in 1997 </li></ul><ul><li>Technology in college classrooms (1997 – 2001) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Cassette players </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Overhead projectors </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Audio lab for language drills (mostly listening) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>First PC lab for students’ use in 1999 </li></ul>

Technology at UH Manoa (2006 – 2008) <ul><li>Computer labs </li></ul><ul><li>Wireless access on campus </li></ul><ul><li>Audio-visual equipment (LCD projector, digital voice recorder, camcorder, etc.) </li></ul><ul><li>MyUH Portal </li></ul><ul><li>Online courses </li></ul>A big leap from my past experience

A challenge for teaching <ul><li>Teachers may not be able to catch up with the latest technology to help their students </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Many students today are digital natives and know more about technology </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Teachers are too busy to learn new technology </li></ul></ul>
