  2. 2. Why do I need to tell time? <ul><li>To ask and tell when something takes place </li></ul><ul><li>To talk about when classes are </li></ul><ul><li>To ask and tell the time </li></ul><ul><li>To say when someone performs an action </li></ul>
  3. 3. Important elements to know: <ul><li>Numbers (0 – 59 absolutely!!!!) </li></ul><ul><li>Clock = el reloj </li></ul><ul><li>Hour = la hora </li></ul><ul><li>Minute = el minuto </li></ul>
  4. 4. ¿Qué hora es? <ul><li>To answer this question you would use one of two constructions: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Es la una. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Son las dos, tres, etc. </li></ul></ul>
  5. 5. Es versus Son <ul><li>Both of these words mean“to be” however one is the plural form. </li></ul><ul><li>When we are talking about 1 o’clock we use “es” – because it is one solitary hour. </li></ul><ul><li>When we talk about 2 through 12 we use “son” – because it is multiple hours. </li></ul>

Ejemplos <ul><li>It is one. </li></ul><ul><li>It is two. </li></ul><ul><li>It is five. </li></ul><ul><li>It is nine. </li></ul><ul><li>It is eleven. </li></ul><ul><li>It is twelve. </li></ul><ul><li>Es la una. </li></ul><ul><li>Son las dos. </li></ul><ul><li>Son las cinco. </li></ul><ul><li>Son las nueve. </li></ul><ul><li>Son las once. </li></ul><ul><li>Son las doce. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Los minutos… <ul><li>What about telling time with the minutes? </li></ul><ul><li>It is very straight forward. </li></ul><ul><li>You tell time with minutes literally – whatever hour and minutes. </li></ul><ul><li>It’s 2:05 = Son las dos y cinco. (It is two and five) </li></ul>

Ejemplos <ul><li>It’s 2:15 </li></ul><ul><li>It’s 2:20 </li></ul><ul><li>It’s 2:30 </li></ul><ul><li>It’s 2:45 </li></ul><ul><li>It’s 2:58 </li></ul><ul><li>Son las dos y quince. </li></ul><ul><li>Son las dos y veinte. </li></ul><ul><li>Son las dos y treinta. </li></ul><ul><li>Son las dos y cuarenta y cinco. </li></ul><ul><li>Son las dos y cincuenta y ocho. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Half Past/Quarter Past <ul><li>To say it is “half past” the hour, you use the term ‘media. </li></ul><ul><li>2:30 = Son las dos y media. </li></ul><ul><li>To say it is a “quarter past” the hour, you use the term cuarto. </li></ul><ul><li>2:15 = Son las dos y cuarto. </li></ul>
  10. 10. A different way to tell time… <ul><li>Whenever, the time is past thirty minutes, you can also subtract from the upcoming hour. </li></ul><ul><li>Ejemplo: </li></ul><ul><li>2:45- Son las tres menos quince. (It is three minus fifteen…or, it is fifteen minutes until three.) </li></ul>
  11. 11. Midnight <ul><li>¡Es la medianoche!= It’s midnight! </li></ul>
