  • 1. Subject and Predicate ENGL 101 Prof. D. Soto
  • 2. Definitions
    • Subject- is who or what the sentence is about. Nouns are often used as subjects.
    • Example: The Bible is the Word of God.
    • Drew and I will go to a parade.
    • Simple Subject- see sentence number 1
    • Compound Subject- see sentence number 2
  • 3. Definitions
    • Predicate- is what is being said about the subject(s) in a sentence. The predicate starts with a verb.
    • Example: Brenda obey her parents .
    • Simple Predicate- when the sentence has one verb
    • Example: Maria cleaned her house yesterday.
    • Compound Predicate- when the sentence has more than one verb
    • Example: Maria cleaned and decorated her house yesterday.
  • 4. Diagram Simple Subject and Simple Predicate
    • Example:
    • Morgan won the race. Morgan won
  • 5. Diagramming Compound Subject and Simple Predicate
    • Peter, James, and John went with Christ up the mountain. (draw the diagram on the board)

    • Instructions: Think of a noun that would make a good subject for each sentence below.
