1. 1. Janis Skutans First year student of Electrical and Power Engineering faculty, RTU [email_address] Gasoline Hybrid Car Structure and Their Popularity in Latvia
 2. 2. Presentation outline:

Aim of the presentation

Introduction

Gasoline-electric h ybrid

-structure of gasoline-electric hybrid car -parallel hybrid car -series hybrid car

Fuel economy

Most popular hybrid cars in Latvia

Conclusion

References

 3. 3. Gasoline Hybrid car structure and their popularity in Latvia The aim of this presentation is to provide an insight into an in n ovative technology called ’gasoline’ hybrid cars, namely, their structure, operation, efficiency and their popularity in Latvia.
 4. 4. Introduction A hybrid car features a small fuel-efficient gas engine combined with an electric motor that assists the engine when accelerating. The electric motor is powered by batteries that recharge automatically while you drive.
 5. 5. Gasoline-Electric Hybrid
 6. 6.

Structure of gasoline-electric hybrid car

Usually it contains the following parts:

Gasoline engine

Fuel tank

Electric motor

Generator

Batteries

Transmission

 7. 7. Hybrid car model
 8. 8. Parallel hybrid car The guide-mark of parallel hybrid is that the engine and the electric motor can turn the transmission at the same time, and the transmission then turns the wheels.
 9. 9. Series hybrid car The guide-mark of this type is that the gasoline engine turns a generator, and the generator can either charge the batteries or power an electric motor that drives the transmission. Thus, the gasoline engine never directly powers the vehicle.
 10. 10. Fuel economy
 11. 11. Most popular hybrid cars in Latvia At present the car dealers in Latvia offer 5 hybrid car models at the starting price: o Toyota Prius - 19096 Ls; o RX400h - 39570 Ls; o GS450h - 39990 Ls; o LS600h - 71490 Ls; o Honda Civic Hybrid – 17660 Ls.
 12. 12. From the mentioned list the most popular hybrid car brand in Latvia is Lexus. In 2006. Lexus sold 624 new cars from which were 98 - RX400h and 23 - GS450h and that is almost 20% of sold new cars. In first four months of 2007 Lexus sold 275 new cars: 45 - RX400h, 20 – GS450h or 23,64%. Most popular hybrid cars in Latvia
 13. 13. Toyota Prius
 14. 14. Lexus RX400h
 15. 15. Lexus GS450h
 16. 16. Lexus LS600h
 17. 17. Honda Civic Hybrid
 18. 18. Conclusion

The study shows that the popularity of hybrid cars is growing due to the skyrocketing petrol price and global warming problems.

T here are a few drawbacks wh ich limit their wider use, e.g. the high price . H ybrid cars are usually more expensive than similar petrol or diesel models.

In many countries the government provides lower taxes, parking prices and car insurance which positively affects the hybrid car market.

Unfortunately, the government of Latvia doesn't take measures to promote the ''green car'‘ market. It doesn't provide any discount to hybrid car owners either. We should learn from our northern neighbo u r Estonia, where hybrid car owners have a free of charge parking in Tallin n .
