  • 1. DEEP COVE CAMP 2013
  • 2. 1.TRAVEL OVER THE LAKE After arriving in Manapouri we headed to Pearl Harbour to load the Real Journeys boat to travel across Lake Manapouri. We headed for the one and only Power Station. The views from the boat were scenic.
  • 3. AFTER GETTING ALL OF THE GEAR OFF THE BOAT AND ONTO THE BUS WE STARTED THE TOUR OF THE POWER STATION. ON THE BOAT WE SAW THE INTAKE GATES ABOVE: THE WATER INTAKE GATES TO THE POWER STATION. 2
  • 4. MANAPOURI POWER STATION RIGHT:THE SEVEN TURBINES THAT MAKE THE HYDRO POWER. ABOVE RIGHT:A MINI DIAGRAM OF THE POWER STATION. ABOVE:THE TOUR OF THE POWER STATION.
  • 5. AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LAKE WE UNLOADED THE BOAT ONTO THE BUS AND WALKED INSIDE THE VISITORS CENTRE.IN SIDE THE VISITORS CENTRE WE HAD A QUESTION AND TALK TIME WITH OUR GUIDE KATHY. IN THE VISTORS CENTRE THERE WAS A MINI DIAGRAM OF THE POWER STATION.AFTER GETTING ON THE BUS AND TRAVAILING TWO KILOMETERS DOWN A WIDE TUNNEL (THAT DID A 360 DEGREE LOOP) WE WENT TO SEE THE TURBINES.THE TURBINES ARE GREAT, BIG, BLUE MACHINES THAT TRANSFER THE WATER INTO HYDRO POWER. THE TUNNEL WAS BUILT A LONG TIME AGO, SO THEY HAD TO USE THE DRILL AND BLAST METHOD TO CREATE THE Quick Quiz TUNNEL. THIS IS WHERE THEY BRING OUT THE DYNAMITE. IN THE TUNNEL THERE WERE WHITE CIRCLES WITH BLACK NUMBERS.THESE Who was our tour guide at the Manapouri Power Station? NUMBERS WERE PLACED EVERY 20 OR SO METRES. THESE ARE THE NUMBERS THAT TELL THE WORKERS HOW FAR INTO THE TUNNEL THEY ARE. ABOUT EVERY COUPLE OF A. Catherine HUNDRED METRES THERE WAS AN EMERGENCY PHONE SO THAT IF THERE WAS B. Katherine AN EMERGENCY, THE WORKERS COULD GET HELP FASTER. AFTER FINISHING THE GUIDED C. Cathy TOUR WE TRAVELLED OVER THE SNOWY WILMOT PASS. HALF WAY UP WE STOPPED AT D. Kathy THE PLATEAU TO LOOK DOWN AND OUT INTO DEEP COVE. BEFORE WE LEFT, OUT POPPED A DREAM. A KIA FLEW PAST US. AFTER TRAVELING DOWN THE Check Answer REST OF THE PASS, TO OUR SURPRISE THERE WAS A WEKA THERE TO MEET US.AFTER GOING OVER THE RULES WE HEADED INTO THE WILDERNESS OF BRASSEL POINT. AT BRASSEL POINT THERE WERE WEKA EVERYWHERE. AFTER DOING A QUIZ WE CAME TOGETHER TO HAVE A POTLUCK FEAST OF MAINLY 4
  • 6. DOUBTFUL SOUND CRUISE On the cruise we saw lots and lots of scenic views. From snowcapped mountains to thundering waterfalls. Out the end of the sound there are there are two predator free islands. Predator free means that there are no pests such as possums, ferrets, hares, stoats or rats. But there may be a chance of the odd deer to swim across. Kokako are now successfully breeding on the islands. When we got back from the amazing doubtful sound cruise, we headed inside the hostel to have a warm cup of milo. After that, we were all pumped up and ready to attack the hanging valley. 5
  • 7. HANGING VALLEY The best part would probably be trying to get up the slippery rock and trying not to slip over on all of the roots. The views on top were amazing! We could see right down into Doubtful and up all the neighbouring ranges and gullies.
  • 8. When we went fishing some of us set out on two dinghies while others were fishing off the wharf or were at the confidence course. TOP LEFT: BAILEY MCCALLUM WITH A FISH HE CAUGHT. TOP RIGHT:XAVIER EMNAS WITH A FISH. RIGHT: LACHLAN DUDIN (ME) WITH A SPOTTY. 7
  • 9. MISS DEEP COVE AFTER DINNER, OUT CAME CELLOTAPE AND NEWSPAPER FOR THE ONE AND ONLY ‘MISS DEEP COVE’. FOR MISS DEEP COVE, WE HAD TO DRESS A MODEL TO REFLECT SOME ASPECTS OF DOUBTFUL SOUND AND DEEP COVE. ABOVE ARE SOME OUTFITS.
  • 10. HELENA FALLS THE SWING BRIDGE WAS A HIGHLIGHT
  • 11. GLOW WORMS Glow worms are easy to see in Deep Cove, because it is so remote that there is no traffic or things that can pollute their habitat. Walking along the road and looking into the bushes, staring back at us were lots of tiny glow worms. They were sitting in the middle of the bushes and trees. When we were about to head back to the hostel we lay like starfish on the road and stared at the stars and satellites. The satellites were flying through the sky like shooting stars. 10
  • 12. AFTER WE GOT BACK FROM HELENA FALLS WE MADE OUR LUNCH AND GOT PREPARED FOR A FUN AFTERNOON FISHING AND GAINING CONFIDENCE AT THE CONFIDENCE COURSE.ON THE BOAT WE CAUGHT JOCK STEWARTS (A.K.A MAORI FISH.)WHILE WE WERE FISHING AND AT HELENA FALLS SOME PEOPLE WON AN AUCTION TO GO FISHING AND CHECK THE CRAY POT. JACK.L AND JACK.K SET OFF WHILE THE REST OF THE GROUP WERE DOING THE HANGING VALLEY. BY FLUKE, CALEB PULLED UP TWO SHARKS IN ONE GO. ONE IS SHOWN TO LEFT
  • 13. THAT DAY THE TWO JACKS WENT FISHING AND CAUGHT A COUPLE OF BLUECOD TO HAVE WITH SCRUMPTIOUS CRAYFISH - YUM!
  • 14. After tea we had a quick supper then headed for bed after a long day at the office. The photos in the background reflect the long day we had.
