Medicaid was created by the Social Security
Amendment of 1965.
To create 3 types of critical health
protection: Health insurance for low income
families with children and people with
disabilities, long term care for older
Americans and individuals with
disabilities, and supplemental coverage for
low income Medicare (e.g., outpatient
persceiption drugs) and Medicaid premium
deductables and cost sharing.
Lyndon B. Johnson was President when
Medicaid was established.
