  3. 3. <ul><li>ERA-STAR Regions : </li></ul><ul><li>stands for E uropean R esearch A rea - S pace T echnologies A pplications & R esearch for the Regions and medium-sized Countries ; </li></ul><ul><li>is a network of European Regions with a strong focus on research and innovation for Space Technologies and its Applications ; </li></ul><ul><li>started in November 2004 with the objective to coordinate R&D management and funding activities in the field of space applications ( GALILEO, GMES, other technologies ) ; </li></ul><ul><li>links research programme managers from European regions and medium-sized countries with the objective of building the trans-regional critical mass in RTD capacity needed to meet the growing opportunities that space programmes and space-based services offer ; </li></ul><ul><li>objectives are implemented by strategic oriented stakeholders with direct access to local policy and economic development ; </li></ul><ul><li>meets the objectives by initiating and actively supporting joint activities and joint calls financed by the regions . </li></ul><ul><li>ERA-STAR Regions : A Network </li></ul>

ERA-STAR Regions ACTIVITIES <ul><li>ERA-STAR Regions concentrates its activities around the existing programmes or initiatives on European and regional level with reference to four main axes: </li></ul><ul><li>GALILEO applications </li></ul><ul><li>GMES applications </li></ul><ul><li>Technology Applications </li></ul><ul><li>Outreach, Education-related partnership and Communication </li></ul><ul><li>Concretely, the consortium has successfully implemented: </li></ul><ul><li>three joint calls for proposals (pilot projects, coordinated transnational calls) </li></ul><ul><li>and further joint initiatives . </li></ul>
  6. 6. 1st JOINT CALL FOR PILOT PROJECTS A strong and sustainable fundament has been established in a kind of information exchange among the partners as well as the definition of a joint roadmap and a joint work plan . Based thereon the European consortium started successively the implementation of its strategy to come to a common approach in order to establish joint programs. First results were gained with the initiation of joint pilot projects . Added-value but also obstacles for further cooperation and coordination have been identified and helped to develop solutions and optimise procedures, rules and the joint work plan for future joint activities. ERA-STAR Regions 7 pilot projects : 1. Earthlook – Earth observation 2. Longitude - Navigation 3. Material Processing – AMOR – Innovative processes 4. Material Processing - ILT – Innovative processes 5. Magic – Galileo Local Augmentation System 6. Sancho – Lighter than air Earth Observation System 7. Brownfields – GMES recovering
  7. 7. 2nd (COORDINATED) JOINT CALL <ul><li>Based on experiences and results of the approach-step – the implementation of pilot projects – the ERA-STAR Regions consortium launched its 2nd (Coordinated) Joint Call in 2007 . </li></ul><ul><li>Partners made a final funding decision to fund 6 projects , namely: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Galileo Drayage </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Toursat </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Cumsat </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>GMES-DSL </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>GaWaLoc </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Brownfields </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Projects started end of 2007 and beginning of 2008. </li></ul>

FURTHER JOINT INITIATIVES <ul><li>ESR participating regions and countries have within the ERA-STAR Regions framework implemented the following bilateral and multilateral initiatives: </li></ul><ul><li>Bremen/Walloon Region </li></ul><ul><li>Bavaria/Madrid </li></ul><ul><li>Bremen/Andalusia </li></ul><ul><li>Czech Republic/ Madrid </li></ul><ul><li>Lombardy in the European Satellite Navigation Competition </li></ul>

ESR Impact <ul><li>ERA-STAR Regions project is a European Success Story in terms of: </li></ul><ul><li>A tight-knit network of EU regions and medium-sized countries, active in Space Technology Applications and Research; </li></ul><ul><li>Harmonised regional/national call procedures ; </li></ul><ul><li>Pooling regional/national resources to fund European research projects; </li></ul><ul><li>Excellent transnational research projects , stemming from joint calls; </li></ul><ul><li>Education & Outreach increasing the awareness of space and space related topics in the society . </li></ul>
