Evaluation 2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our media product uses the conventions of a teenage rom-com in order to show the stereotypical social groups in teenage school life. In our film we have tried to include the three main stereotypes, Geeks, ‘IT’ girls, and the binge drinking party-goers. All of these I think we have successfully portrayed in our film opening.
Our first scene is the POV shot of a party. With this continuous shot, we made sure it created an edgy dis-coloured effect, not only to give the feeling of intoxication but to also portray the scene as a dream. We made sure that our protagonists gave off the right image, giving them actions to do, and props and music to dance too. For example, we had the first guy smoking, holding a beer, to a pair of drunken girls dancing, to a couple passionately kissing. With this mix of characters we covered the stereotypes in todays view of teenage lifestyle.
At the end of our POV dream sequence, we ended it with our second main protagonist, the ‘it’ girl. Here we used editing to help portray this, along with her clothing. As the main character spots the girl, we slowed our film down to create a feeling of awe for this girl. This also helps the audience to remember her face for upcoming scenes in the film. Here we achieved the stereotype of the popular pretty girl who every guy fantasises about.
The next scene is the bedroom scene where we are first introduced to our main protagonist, ‘the geek’. With this particular scene we relied on props and acting to help portray his particular stereotype as editing and filming couldn’t help much with this. We made sure his look was correct for the conventions of this stereotype, for example, a middle parting, glasses and braces. We also relied on costume to portray his personality, we decided pyjamas would exaggerate this. We then kited out the room with posters showing mathematics revision, and changed his computer screen to an image of world of war craft, a video game. With a great actor, and the use of props and costume we managed to portray the stereotype of a geek successfully in this scene.
