  • This is an email that I sent out to some of my colleagues to get input while I was developing the presentation. We all work in stressful environments and our emotions affect us, and our colleagues and clients, and our workplace overall. Identifying and dealing with our own emotions, pain, and stress can help us to help ourselves and be better leaders within our organizations. Checking yourself is a first step in caring for yourself and ensuring you do not burn out - so you can do your job better in the tough arena of Harm Reduction.   My plan in the session is to work with the participants, and if time allows, to develop the self assessment tool so they, and others, can check themselves before they wreck themselves.   I feel that developing the tool at the conference is most excellent, and it will give the participants a chance to work on something, then be able to use it at work, to help support one another, and ultimately be better care providers, whether at work or at home.   What I need from you is one question or thought that you use to help maintain your competence, mental health, physical health, etc. that I can include as a launching point, and in case my plan totally bombs….. I do not think we will have time to quantify the questionnaire, but I think it may be a good launching point for people to reflect on their own lives and level of stress.  I will also ask the participants to share coping mechanisms, resources, and how they manage to work in what are sometimes stressful working environments.   • Tough to give our best to clients and our co-workers when we need to look after ourselves first.
  • Don’t try too hard to convince friends and family about Harm Reduction, this may be an exhausting exercise, focus on key people at work and at home.
  • http://www.joyofconflict.com/editor_articles/ConflictDrama-VictimVillainHero.htm Often we can move around the triangle and the people and clients we work with may actually have a different perspective of where they think we, or they, are.
  • Whenever I hear the phrase “those people” “that group of people” etc, I know I have found a teachable moment. I used to get called “you people” when I worked in areas where I was a minority or where I was different from the population I was working with.
  • One of the most valuable tools that I have to share is the Statement of commitment to Co- workers. I include it here in the next couple of slides. http://www.chcm.com/docs/Commitment_to_My_Co-Worker_E-News_11-10.pdf It is good if all workplaces could develop a similar Statement, and even have your co-workers sign it, and post if for your clients to see. This will help you be accountable to each other, and ultimately look after yourself in the long run.
  • Listening is the number one skill that works for most of us. If we take the time to listen and stop trying to fix things that we think need fixing, well, it will help and make our jobs easier in the long run.

  • Self care thoughts from a colleague Self care may not solve all of your stress, but it is important to look after yourself, and the people around you.
  • The sample scale can be quantified, it can also be used as a discussion launching point, or as a means to reflect on current feelings that may indicate you are a burned out or maybe just a bit too crispy.

I think most people can identify that they are stressed- but how to resolve/alleviate it?” </li></ul><ul><li>“ The one thing I use to help maintain sanity in the workplace- is focusing on personal goals- things which are achievable that help me to feel control and success when I am stressed by outside factors. i.e. School actually helps me to alleviate work related stress, because I know I am investing in my own future and have control over how much effort i put in.” </li></ul><ul><li>“ Also- lots of self indulgent reading/internet surfing.” </li></ul>

Build a compost bin, fix a toaster, paint your nails, bake a cake, grow your own food, organize a drawer, etc.) </li></ul><ul><li>Look at your life from four angles: spiritual, mental, emotional, physical. What can you do to balance these four areas of your life. Baby steps! </li></ul><ul><li>Seek counseling via an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or local community health organization to talk about your feelings and concerns and to stay on top of your mental health. </li></ul><ul><li>To do: Write out a To-Do list before you leave work then leave work at work. Have paper and a pen by your bed so that if you wake up at four a.m. thinking about the meeting agenda you haven’t yet created, you can write it down and get back to sleep, knowing you won’t forget later on. </li></ul><ul><li>Celebrate the small victories in a day: your client made eye-contact for the first time, you completed three items on your list of things to do, a colleague complemented you on your quick return of their message, etc. </li></ul>Cont’d

Deep condition your hair. </li></ul><ul><li>Call a friend. </li></ul><ul><li>Exercise: walk to and from work, run, swim, cycle, get a gym pass, have sex, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>Disconnect with the world – connect with yourself and your interests: Turn off phones and computers. Read that book or watch that film you’ve been meaning to. </li></ul><ul><li>Laugh. Cry. Scream. </li></ul><ul><li>Debrief with a colleague. </li></ul>Cont’d

Scream into a pillow. </li></ul><ul><li>Have a Crafternoon! Gather your favorite friends and crafting/art supplies and create! </li></ul><ul><li>Volunteer somewhere fulfilling. </li></ul><ul><li>Seek alternative forms of healing: energy healers, massage therapists, laugh therapists, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>Learn something new: take a cooking class, learn Spanish, learn to re-upholster your ugly furniture, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>Get some sun! </li></ul><ul><li>Nap and get some sleep. </li></ul>Cont’d

Do one thing at a time. Enjoy making your cup of tea, drinking it, placing it on the bedside table to turn the page in your book – you get the picture. </li></ul><ul><li>Listen to music. Close your eyes or dance or both! </li></ul><ul><li>Retail therapy: the toilet paper can wait – get those shoes you’ve been eyeing! </li></ul><ul><li>Take in your community: go to the zoo, to an art gallery, the museum, local shops or local landmarks/parks </li></ul><ul><li>Remember : you are no good to others if you haven’t taken care of your needs first. Ultimately, remember we are not here to save lives, but to provide support, education & care that will empower people to save themselves if they so choose…it is up to them, not us. </li></ul>

How do you look after yourself? <ul><li>Most important to my self-care is having colleagues who know and work in a similar environment with similar staff and clients, and who I can talk with when I need-these are other RNs that I trust and respect. </li></ul><ul><li>The other significant things I do for self-care are: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>reflect on the day/client/situation </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>listen to music </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>enjoy my hobby – genealogy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>spend time with my immediate family-husband and kids </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>have an occasional nice glass of wine </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Have fun!!! </li></ul>
