Unit Plan- Malaria

  2. 2. What is Malaria???<br />Malaria is an infectious disease that is cause by a protozoan parasite.<br />
  3. 3.  Plasmodium<br />Plasmodium is the name of the parasite that causes the disease Malaria.<br />The plasmodium parasite feeds off of red blood cells contents. Causing the red blood cell to eventually burst.<br />The plasmodium parasite enters the human though the bite of a Anopheles mosquito.<br />After the plasmodium parasite finishes its cycle in the human it can infect other mosquitoes that bite the infected human.<br />

Stages of Malaria<br />Stage 1: Anopheles mosquito inoculates sporozoites into the human host.<br />Stage 2: The sporozoites then infect liver cells of the host and mature into schizonts.<br />Stage 3: The schizonts rupture and release merozoites. <br />Stage 4: Merozoites travel through the blood stream to infect red blood cells.<br />

Stages of Malaria<br />Stage 5: In the red blood cells, the ring stage trophozoites mature into schizonts, which rupture releasing merozoites.<br />Stage 6: Some parasites differentiate into sexual erythrocytic stages (gametocytes).<br />Stage 7: Blood stage parasites are responsible for the clinical manifestations of the disease.<br />Stage 8: The gametocytes are then ingested by an Anopheles mosquito as it feeds on the infected host.<br />

Stages of Malaria<br />Stage 9: The parasites’ multiply in the mosquito which is known as the sporogonic cycle.<br />Stage 10: While in the mosquito's stomach, the microgametes penetrate the macrogametes generating zygotes.<br />Stage 11: The zygotes in turn become motile and elongated which invade the midgut wall of the mosquito where they develop into oocysts.<br />Stage 12: The oocysts grow, rupture, and release sporozoites , which make their way to the mosquito's salivary glands and then inoculation of the sporozoites into a new human host.<br />
