    2. What If… You lost your client database? You lost your financial database? You lost everything on your server? Your network was down for several days and you couldn t couldn’t access your data? A major storm, flood, or fire destroyed your office? You ill d ff Y spilled coffee all over your computer? ll ? For the full recorded presentation, including audio, visit www.BlueTangerineSolutions.com/Webinar.
    3. “Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterward.” th l ft d” - Vernon Law For the full recorded presentation, including audio, visit www.BlueTangerineSolutions.com/Webinar.
    4. But That Could Never Happen to Me! pp (And Other Lies Business Owners Like to Believe About Their Businesses.) Sources of data loss: User Error: Save vs Save As, accidental deletion, etc. Mechanical Failure: All hard drives crash eventually! Disgruntled Employee: Have a lot of data access Accidents: Spilled coffee, dropped computer, plumbing leak, etc. , External attacks: Hackers, spyware, viruses, equipment theft, etc. Acts f God: hurricane, fi fl d tornado, lightening A t of G d h i fire, flood, t d li ht i strike, earthquake, etc. e.g. Hurricane Katrina, Midwest floods, Palm Bay wildfires For the full recorded presentation, including audio, visit www.BlueTangerineSolutions.com/Webinar.
    5. Statistics 93% of companies that lost their data center for 10 days or more due to a disaster filed for bankruptcy within one year of the disaster, and 50% filed for bankruptcy immediately. (Source: National Archives & Records Administration in Washington.) 20% of small to medium businesses will suffer a major disaster causing loss of critical data every 5 years. (Source: Richmond House Group) This year, 40% of small to medium businesses that manage their own network and use the Internet for more than e-mail will have their network accessed by a hacker and more than 50% won’t even know they were attacked. hacker, won t attacked (Source: Gartner Group) For the full recorded presentation, including audio, visit www.BlueTangerineSolutions.com/Webinar.
    6. Costs of Data Loss and Downtime Hard costs of repairing and restoring the network, at $100 or more per hour, averaging 4-8 hours minimum. Lost productivity while waiting for your repair p person to arrive (typically 1-2 days), plus possible ( yp y y) p p emergency surcharges. Time and effort to recreate lost data. Possible reputation damage and public image costs. Customer notification costs (stolen personal data). For the full recorded presentation, including audio, visit www.BlueTangerineSolutions.com/Webinar.
    7. Ounce of Prevention vs. Pound of Cure 100% of these disasters and restoration costs can be completely avoided or greatly mitigated easily g y g y and inexpensively with some planning and proactive maintenance maintenance. For the full recorded presentation, including audio, visit www.BlueTangerineSolutions.com/Webinar.
    8. The Small Business Challenge g Even a small 3-5 person network is complex and p p requires significant “care and feeding.” Small Businesses rarely have the resources to hire a full time IT staff person. i ff Often the staff member who knows just a little bit about computers inherits the support job. When stumped they call a consultant on a “break-fix” basis, but they do not provide proactive maintenance. The Result: a network that is ill-maintained and unstable. It is only a matter of time until it crashes. For the full recorded presentation, including audio, visit www.BlueTangerineSolutions.com/Webinar.
    9. 1. Back Up Files Every Day p yy If the information on a disk is important to you, then you need to have more than one copy of it! We recommend using disk-based backup options disk based rather than tape drives. A mirrored hard drive on a server is an important piece of a backup plan, but alone is not sufficient. Are users really storing all of their critical files on the server? For the full recorded presentation, including audio, visit www.BlueTangerineSolutions.com/Webinar.
    10. 2. Test your Backups Regularly y p g y A backup system is not a “set it and forget it” type set it of operation. All tape backup drives will eventually fail. Checking log files is not enough, you must actually do test restores periodically. For the full recorded presentation, including audio, visit www.BlueTangerineSolutions.com/Webinar.
    11. 3. Store a Backup Copy Offsite p py Offsite data protects against fire, flood, and theft risks. Do not rely on the human element, ie. someone is assigned to take the backups home with them. Internet based services make this very easy and affordable. For the full recorded presentation, including audio, visit www.BlueTangerineSolutions.com/Webinar.
    12. 4. Keep Virus Protection Up-to-date p p Viruses are no longer just annoying. They are now tools of cyber-criminals stealing credit card and identity information, or sending out spam. y , g p Anti-virus software that is out of date is not effective. Common Mistake: Don’t assume that you have virus protection because it came with your PC. Common Mistake: Virus protection is installed, but has been turned off for some reason. For the full recorded presentation, including audio, visit www.BlueTangerineSolutions.com/Webinar.
    13. 5. Set up a Firewall p Hackers are constantly scanning for open ports, regardless of the network size. In addition to stealing data, they also want to steal bandwidth. UTM Appliances (Universal Threat Management) are newer devices that combine firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spam technologies together. We recommend Untangle’s UTM product (see www.untangle.com). For the full recorded presentation, including audio, visit www.BlueTangerineSolutions.com/Webinar.
    14. 6. Install Critical Security Patches y Most hackers learn about security holes once the patches are announced. The time between the release of the update and exploits that target the vulnerability is getting shorter every day. yy Someone has to be checking to ensure that these patches are staying current. For the full recorded presentation, including audio, visit www.BlueTangerineSolutions.com/Webinar.
