    • Greenhouse effect
      • It is estimated that the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere has gone up by 25 percent since the industrial revolution of 1789.
      • This has led to an increase of 0.1°C in the ocean temperature.
      • While the Arctic ice was 6-7 mts. (20-23 ft.) in 1976 has reduced to 4-5 mts. (13-17ft.) by 1987.

    • Global warming
The climate change attributed to the Greenhouse effect. It is estimated that by 2030, average global temperatures will rise between 0.7-2° C
This would lead to increase in the average sea level due to the melting of polar ice caps.
This could lead to the submergence of low lying areas and islands around the world.

    • Climate change
The various alterationsmodifications happening in climate over a period of time
This is caused by an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which inhibit the transmission of some of the sun’s energy from the earth’s surface to outer space
These gases include carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and other chemicals
Due to deforestation, burning of fossil fuels such as petrol, oil, coal and natural gas; and the release of CFCs from refrigerators and air conditioners.

    • Loss of Biodiversity
Change in the climate and transformation of landscapes
Change in Floristic and Faunistic composition
Many species reach status of endangered, threatened
Many of them will also be soon extinct

    • Values of biodiversity
      1. Direct values – consumptive use values
      2. Indirect values – non consumptive value (climate, soil, water)
      - Aesthetical, social and cultural value
Consumptive use – animals, fish, plants
Productive use – pesticide, medicinal, cultural, social, ethical.

    • What can we do?
      • Reduce CFC’s?
      • Regulate fossil fuel burning?
      • Regulate deforestation and forest fire?
      • Reduce contribution of smoke to atmosphere?
      • Entertain more green space?
      • Plant more trees?
