  • EARTH DAY HAS BEEN MARKED ON APRIL 22, EVERY YEAR SINCE 1970. IN THAT YEAR, STUDENTS GATHERED ATCOLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES AROUND THE UNITED STATES TO RAISE AWARENESS OF WIDESPREAD ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION. THIS YOUNG MAN PARTICIPATED IN THE EVENT HELD NEAR PACE UNIVERSITY IN NEW YORK.
  • THE 1970 EVENT WAS ALSO OBSERVED BY THOUSANDS OF The 1970’s eventPRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS. THESE KIDS, FROMTHE CHILDREN OF THE SACRED HEART SCHOOL IN NEW YORK,HELPED CLEAN UP A MONUMENT IN THE CITYS UNION PARK.
  • CONCEIVED AS A GRASS-ROOTS EVENT, CELEBRATED ON A DAYCHOSEN BECAUSE IT DID NOT CONFLICT WITH HOLIDAYS ORCOLLEGE EXAMS, EARTH DAY HAS EVOLVED INTO A HOLIDAY WITHNO PARTICULAR TRADITIONS OR METHODS OF OBSERVANCE.
  • More than 20million peopleorganized toprotect the planeton the very firstEarth Day in 1970.What began as a“teach-in” led to anation-wide, coast-to-coastdemonstration forenvironmentalprotection and thelaws that existtoday.

  • • Put your plastic bottles in the Plastic Recycling Containers. • Place old papers in the teacher’s paper recycling box.• Start recycling at home and deliver your sorted items toany city or county recycling center.• EcoKnights will recycle your old cellphones and electronics. Bring themto room 04-112
  • •Commute to school with other students.•Live close by? Walk or bike to school.•Use less paper, write on both sides.•Use a pencil that’s NOT made of plastic.•Ask if you can email your assignment.Log off and shut down the school computer when youare done.Consider eating lower on the food chain-a meatlessMonday!
  • • Refill water bottles.• Reuse plastic bags.• Give an item that you no longer want to someone who can use it.• Donate unwanted items that are in good condition to a charity.• Give old books and magazines to our local public library.

  • Restore a healthy, clean, safe environment for all livingcreatures… •Have your pet spayed or neutered. •Spend some quality time with your pet. •Never chain your dog! •Get involved! Volunteer at a local animal agency. •Consider supporting our Florida endangered species by contacting your congressman and ask for greater protection laws.

  • I wasn’t around for Earth Day 1970, but I was a high school junior studying in Montevideo, Uruguay for Earth Day 1994. For Earth Day 2002 I was part AmeriCorps*NCCC and we worked with Denver Mountain Parks Service on a reforestation project outside of Denver Colorado to help repair some of the damage done by the devastating forest fires of 2001. We cleaned up pollution and planted 1500 saplings in 12 hours! Can you guess who I am? Ms. Furphy
