    • This vegetable is, predictably, very bitter in flavor.
    • Bitter gourd is a fast growing, trailing or climbing vine with thin stems and tendrils.
    • The fruit looks rather like a pale green cucumber with a bumby, grooved skin.
    • It is 10-20 cm long, tapering at the ends and covered with blunt tubercles.
    • The seeds are white in raw fruits and become red when they ripe.

    • There are 2 varieties of this vegetable; the large kind is long, oblong and pale green in color; the other kind is small, little oval and dark green.
    • Both the types are bitter in taste, they turn reddish-orange when ripe.

    • The unripe fruit is eaten in various ways, but the ripe fruit is too toxic and bitter.
    • It has many alleged medical uses.
    • The leaves, flowers, and seeds are more extensively used in folk medicines.
    • The bitter gourd is a common vegetable cultivated all over India. It is very popular for Indian cuisines.

    • The vitamin C content of bitter gourd was high in mature stage, the richest source of ascorbic acid.
    • The fresh tender vegetable containing 188.0 mg per 100 g of tissue and the juice 175.5 mg per 100 ml.
    • Old and brittle carilla contained only one-half as much, and sun drying occasioned a loss of 83.0 %.
    • The dried vegetable contained 149.0 mg per 100g.

    • The fruit and the seeds of bitter gourd has many medicinal properties which includes, anti-leukemic, anti-viral, anti-ulcer, anti-tumor, anti-lipolytic, anti-mutagen, anti-microbial, anti-obesity, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-diabetic, anti-spasmodic, anti-fertility, anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, and hypoglycemic activity.

    • Clear heat and the evil fire of the heart, detoxifies, improves eyesight, strengthen the vital energy and sexual power. It also relieves thirst, sunstroke and carbuncles.
    • In ancient times, raw bitter gourd was used as a cure of eye troubles, stomach disorders and skin eruptions.
    • The seeds can help clear up infections of the chest and guts.
    • Juice from crushed leaves was a liver tonic and menstrual regulator.
    • Crushed flowers and roots were cough remedies and asthma fix-its.

    • The ripe bitter melon has been shown to exhibit some rather profound anti-cancer effects, especially in leukemia.

    • Diabetes
    • Indians have an almost mystical belief in the ability of bitter gourd to cure this disease*. A majority of diabetics usually suffer from malnutrition, as they are usually under-nourished. Bitter gourd being rich in essential vitamins & minerals such as vitamin A,B1,B2,C & minerals iron, calcium, phosphorous, copper & potassium. Research by a team of British doctors had discovered that it contains hypoglycemic principle designated as plant-insulin which has been found highly beneficial in lowering the blood & urine sugar levels. Fresh juice of unripe bitter melon has been confirmed in scientific studies in animals & humans to have blood-sugar lowering action.
    * It is effective only in non insulin dependent diabetes, the variant treated with oral hypoglycaemic drugs not injectable insulin, need to check regularly blood sugar levels to see the response of the disease to this treatment.

    • The new world is slowly beginning to discover for itself the ability of this versatile fruit to treat diseases as lod as diabetes and as new as HIV/AIDS.
    • Recently, a search for natural, anti-viral herbs threw up this interesting fact the proteins in Momordica inhibit the enzyme reverse transcriptase, which is central to the pathogenesis of HIV/AIDS.
    • People with HIV positive includes bitter gourd in their diet will lower the viral load in their blood by selectively inhibiting the growth of cells already infected with the virus. All this is just one more arrow in the bitter gourd’s burgeoning quiver of cures!
