NACAT Conference Mastering Information Presentation Transcript

  • 1. Mastering Online Information A look at new ways to find and mange Internet information. Presented by Grant Swaim NACAT Conference 2007 Guilford Tech Community College
  • 2. So What’s The Big Deal?
    • I already know how to “surf” the web...
    • I google some key words and I can find millions of pages in seconds…
    • It doesn’t get much better than that,
    • Does it?
  • 3. Website Growth is the Big Deal
  • 4. New Tools and Techniques
    • Utilize existing search tools more efficiently
      • Search Engines
      • Search Directories
    • Monitor Internet information via subscription
    • Explore audio content (podcasting)
    • Explore video content
    • Managing bookmarks (favorites)
    • Personal portal page
  • 5. Search Engine Vs Search Directory
    • A search engine indexes all the words on virtually all web pages and allows you to perform a keyword search on the indexed information. This process is handled automatically by “bots”.
    • A search directory lists websites in specific categories and sites are found by browsing categories. Web sites are placed in directories by humans
  • 6. Search Engine Pros / Cons
    • Pro
    • Good at finding obscure information
    • Is constantly being updated
    • Con
    • Can return large results
    • Can return irrelevant results
  • 7. Search Directory Pros / Cons
    • Pro
    • Are good at finding information that fits into categories
    • Return small, relevant results
    • Con
    • Are not good at finding obscure information (things that do not fit into a category)
  • 8. Typical Search Engine Features
    • Advanced search filtering features
    • News search
      • News alerts
    • Image search
    • Mapping
    • Search a single site
    • Specialty searches
  • 9. Googlemania

    • Why?
  • 10. Information via Subscription
    • For sites and information that you track on a regular basis, consider managing the information by subscription.
    • The site must publish a news feed (RSS)
    • You must read the RSS file with a news feed reader (aggregator).
  • 11. Examples of RSS Subscriptions
    • Feeds Tracking New Webpage Content
    • http://autotech-elearning.com
    • Feeds Tracking News Alerts
    • http://news.google.com/nwshp?ned=us
  • 12. Information Via News Alerts
    • A great way to monitor specific information that is hitting news servers is to set up a news alert.
    • Alerts can also be set up for other specialty searches.
  • 13. Managing Audio Content
    • Audio files can often be downloaded one at a time.
    • Or downloaded as part of a subscription (podcast). When you subscribe to an RSS/XML feed it means you will automatically receive new podcast releases.
  • 14. Managing Video Content
    • Video content, like audio content, is available as individual downloads or by subscription.
    • The Internet is now used to deliver “TV like” programming. This programming often lacks a large enough audience to justify broadcasting.
  • 15. Sources of Internet Video
    • Video Directories
    • http://www.youtube.com
    • Video Podcast
    • http://dl.tv
  • 16. Managing Bookmarks (Favorites)
    • When you bookmark a website with a web browser, the book marks are stored on the local machine.
    • Consider using an Internet based bookmarking service. Then all your bookmarks are available from any Internet connection.
  • 17. Building a Personal Portal Page
    • There are many good (and free) sites that allow you to build your own portal page. On a personal portal page you can include:
    • Bookmarking
    • News feeds
    • Notes
    • ToDo lists
    • Weather
    • File Uploads
