ZIONISM IN THE MIDDLE EAST TODAY Carly Reinhart & Kristina Kokorelias
Zionism• Zionism is the national liberation movement of the Jewish people and the state of Israel is its political expression.•Israel used to be a symbol of freedom and a source of pride for the Jews of the Diaspora.• Israels mistreatment of the Palestinians, however, has turned it into a liability and a moral burden for the liberal segment of the Jewish community.•Zionism today is being used to deny the Palestinians any independent political existence in Palestine.
Conflict between Israel and Palestine•The Palestinian territories within Israel are known as the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip.•Both states had been established following WWII, by the United Nations•The Zionist movement follows the belief that the territories of Palestine rightfully belong to the Jewish people, as it is their God-given land.•In many verses of the Torah, God promised the Israelites all the land from the Euphrates river to the Nile river•Zionists intensified their efforts to have Jews come to Palestine. And they were successful to a great extent, with thousands of Jews immigrating to Palestine in the past.
•Israel illegally occupied the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. The war was fought between Israel and the Arab countries of Egypt, Syria, and Jordan.•The Palestinian territories were under full authority of the Israeli state, until 1994•In 1993, at the Oslo Accords held in Norway, the Israeli State and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) decided to allow for transitional Palestinian governments to operate within both territories, which would remain occupied by Israel•Initially, the Palestinian National Authority was put in place in the West Bank and Gaza with a maximum term of five years, after which negotiations between Israel and Palestine were supposed to follow.
•In 2006, an extremist Sunni Muslim Palestinian political party, Hamas (Islamic Resistance Movement) won the parliamentary elections in the Gaza strip•Since Hamas came to power in 2006, they have refused to recognize Israel as a state•Hamas is a militant organization, and has been recognized by many as terrorist, due to their extreme use of violence•Hamas has carried out suicide bombings and attacks using mortars and short range rockets.•Hamas has launched attacks within Israel borders, as well as within the Gaza Strip and the West Bank
•Israel fought back, and launched full scale assaults against Hamas•In 2008-2009, a war between Israel and Hamas took place, in the Gaza Strip and southern Israel. It was ongoing for 3 weeks, and resulted in between 1,166 and 1,417 Palestinian and 13 Israeli deaths.•In June of 2008, Israel and Hama’s agreed on a six-month cease fire.•Conflict continues to this day.
