Assignment 3.1
P1 Describe atomic and electronic structures of elements 1-20,
including isotopes, in the periodic table
M1 Describe the patterns and trends of chemical properties of
groups 1 and 7 in the periodic table
D1 Explain the patterns and trends within groups 1 and 7 in the
periodic table

Learning Outcomes
Know how atomic structure relates to the properties of the elements and
compounds.
Scenario
You are working as a lab technician for a local chemical company. Your
manager has asked you to compile a database of the first 20 elements of the
periodic table which can be used as a central information source for these
elements. This database will be used by scientists as they design and carry
out experiments involving these elements. Your manager also wants you to
produce an information leaflet and presentation which identifies and explains
patterns and trends of metallic and non-metallic elements in the periodic table.
Tasks
P1 Draw the atomic/electronic structures of the elements hydrogen,
helium, lithium, beryllium, boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine,
neon, sodium, magnesium, aluminium, silicon, phosphorous, sulphur,
chlorine, argon, potassium and calcium.
Draw the structures of the isotopes chlorine 35 and chlorine 37 and
write a short report describing the differences between them.
M1 Investigate each of the elements in groups 1 and 7 of the periodic
table. Use this information to construct a leaflet which describes the
patterns and trends of each of these groups.
D1 Use the information you have gained about the atomic/electronic
structure of the first 20 elements to explain the patterns and trends
within groups 1 and 7 of the periodic table. Produce a presentation,
which you can deliver to your manager and a group of scientists, which
explains these trends.
