  2. 2. READING I: Read the text and complete the chart. The first dinosaurs appeared about 230 million years ago. They lived in the forests with a very dense vegetation and active volcanoes. The climate was warm and it rained a lot. What did dinosaurs eat? Some dinosaurs ate meat like lizards, turtles or hunted other dinosaurs. There were otherdinosaurs that ate plants and fruits. The meat-eaters were extremely dangerous and ferocious, for example the Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Compsognathus. The Compsognathus is one of thefew dinosaurs for which the diet is well known: they ate mostly lizards. On the other hand, theplant-eaters -like the Apatosaurus - were rather inoffensive and quiet. How big were dinosaurs? The largest complete dinosaur we know of was Brachiosaurus; it reached 23m in length and 12 min height (about the length of two large buses). The Apatosaurus was about 22 meters long , itwas a tremendously large long-necked animal with a long tail. It had a very tiny brain and smallhead. It weighed around 26.000 kg, it is the same as the weight of 4 elephants! The Tyrannosaurus Rex was about 12 meters long and weighed approximately 6000 kg. It had ashort neck, an enormous head, large teeth and a long, heavy tail. The smallest dinosaur was justslightly larger than a chicken; it was the Compsognathus . It was 1 m long and probably weighedabout 2.5 kg. The Compsognathus had long legs and a longer tail. The eyes were very large andthe teeth were very small and sharp. 4. 4. READING II. Read the text and answer the questions.THE SOLAR SYSTEM:The Sun is one of the millions of stars in thegalaxy called the Milky Way. There are eightplanets that orbit the Sun. These are: Mercury,Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus andNeptune. The Earth is millions of miles away fromthe Sun and much smaller than the Sun. TheEarth orbits, or moves around, the Sun. The timeit takes the Earth to orbit the Sun is called a year. The Earth takes 365 ¼ days to make one completeorbit, so a year is normally 365 days. THE MOON: The Moon is the Earth’s natural satellite and nearest neighbor. It is a sphere. It is made of rocks and has many craters. There are no plants or animals on the Moon as there is no oxygen. The Moon takes 28 days to orbit the Earth. This is called a lunar month.THE EARTH AND SUN:In addition to rotating around the Sun, the Earth rotates onits axis. It takes the Earth 24 hours to spin around its axisonce. We call this a day. As the Earth spins, half of it facesthe sun and half of it doesn’t. When part of the Earthdoesn’t face the Sun it is night there. The Earth is warm because of the Sun. The Sun is a ball ofgases. It is responsible for energy and it gives us light andheat. Plants and animals need sunlight. Plants make foodand oxygen from the sunlight through a process calledphotosynthesis. All living things need oxygen to breathe. 4
