DOES THE GOVERNMENT WANT MORE GREEN IT? GovLoop and Hewlett-Packard recently polled the GovLoop community to find out how “green” their actions are in the work place. In three separate polls, they found that: How does energy efficiency influence your purchase decision for a PC? 39% of respondents indicated that High Degree of Influence energy efficiency has some influence on their purchasing Some Influence decision when buying a PC Minimal Influence 52% are motivated by a combination of cost savings and the No Influence environmental impact upon 0.0% 10.0% 20.0% 30.0% 40.0% 50.0% purchasing an energy efficient PC 50% power down their computer and monitor every night. powering down as a teleworker working from home and powering down before leaving the office. Other GovLoop members agreed that this trend does exist, such as, Cleat Grumbly who responded, “Very true. I always power down at work but rarely do at home.” It appears that the majority want to have a good impact on the Earth and do their part by powering down at the end of the day or consider being energy efficient from the point of sale. Amanda Blount, a huge advocate of “Greening the world” gave fellow GovLooper’s a “some simple ways to save the planet a little more by reducing the carbon footprint of computers: 1) Sleep mode as often as possible 2) Delete all information from your computer and give the computers to a non-profit agency and 3) Turn the computer into a recycle or refurbish program.” All in all respondents appeared to be interested in cutting costs and saving the planet. Another GovLoop member, noisecontrol, feels as though travel costs may be the main thing that saves energy when considering a PC.
