  • 5. 7 Secrets of Profitable E-Books Introduction Welcome to the insider's circle. This is the place where hidden knowledge is revealed to a chosen few and today is your turn to discover the truth. I am about to reveal to you the 7 Secrets of Profitable E-Books. Without this information, many people have suffered frustration, agony, and ultimately defeat in their attempts to build an information publishing business. I have been marketing online since January 2005. Cloaked with ignorance, I started marketing and promoting lots of information products. My blindness to these secrets cost me hundreds of dollars – wasted on worthless educational resources as I chased after the elusive knowledge that would propel me toward publishing success. But, I never quit in my pursuit of prosperity... I found mentors who revealed to me what I needed to know. I published numerous products of my own and tasted both success and loss. And I learned. I learned what makes one e-book profitable and destines another to failure. Now it's my turn to initiate you into the world of successful e- book publishing and teach you... • 6. 7 Secrets of Profitable E-Books Secret #1 - Market Research The first secret that I want to share with you is among the most important. It is the need for market research. Failure to start with market research was my first mistake right out of the chute. I was just jumping into new projects with a good idea and then started making products without having any rational business idea of whether it was a viable product or not. Lack of research will kill a product plain and simple. If you don’t know who your audience is, if you don’t know what it is they need, if you don’t know if there is even an exisiting market for what you want to sell you are going to waste a lot of time, energy, and money. That kind of recklessness will kill your business. It will kill your enthusiasm for your business and when you are starting out that's the last thing you need. So, research is critical and you have to do it before anything else. What You Really Need to Know The first thing you want to know about a market is whether there are similar existing products. Competition isn’t bad, it's actually very, very good. Say that again, 'Competition is GOOD!' If there's nobody selling to a market you are exploring the odds are it's because there's nobody buying. Maybe you’ve invented Download the entire 7 Secrets of Profitable E-Books for FREE... Page 6
  • 7. 7 Secrets of Profitable E-Books something or discovered something that no one knows about, but if that’s the case you're going to spend an enormous amount of your personal time trying to educate people. You'll have to convince them that they need to know this new information (because obviously they haven’t been looking for it). Then you have to convince them to spend money. That’s a lot of work. Rather than go through all that trouble and try to create a new market from scratch, it's better to go out and find an existing, viable audience who are actively buying products and find a new angle for your product. You want to create something that you can sell to an audience that’s already used to buying. The next thing you need to know is whether you can reach this audience on the Internet. Say you're dealing with senior citizens who don’t use computers. You might have a great product for them but if you're trying to sell it to them online, and your audience isn’t online, then it's a non-starter idea and destined to fail. Start by making sure that there are forums dedicated to the topic. Check to see if there are blogs talking about the topic for your proposed e-book. The existence of newsletters and discussion groups, are also indications that there's an active group of people out there who will be interested in your product. You will also know that you can reach them. Download the entire 7 Secrets of Profitable E-Books for FREE... Page 7
  • 8. 7 Secrets of Profitable E-Books Make notes of all the places you find people discussing your topic. As you go forward what you'll find is that the people who own the forums, blogs, newsletters, and discussion groups are your best allies for promoting your new product. Those are the people that you can start to approach once you have a product to become joint venture partners and affiliates. They already own traffic and have influence, so share the profits and piggyback on their hard work. You will also want to tap these congregating places as you develop your product. Listening to what people are talking about will help you find out the specific questions and struggles your potential customers are having so your product can solve a real need. The last thing you need to know is whether the people in your market buy things online. There are a lot of people who talk online about all kinds of things but will never pull out a credit card and make a purchase. They always purchase products offline. These folks use the Internet for research but prefer to make their purchase in a brick-and-mortar store. You want to make sure that you're dealing with an audience that buys products online. There are a lot of ways to do this but here are a couple of good ones. The first way is to run a test campaign. Buy a domain name, put up a Web site, write a sales page, and put an order button at the bottom. When people click on the order button, send them to a page that Download the entire 7 Secrets of Profitable E-Books for FREE... Page 8
  • 9. 7 Secrets of Profitable E-Books says “I'm sorry the product is not ready yet, but put your name and email in this box and we’ll send you an update as soon as it's ready.” If you get a good response, then you go ahead with the product. If no one responds you trash it and move on. A test campaign only costs you a domain name and a little bit of money to drive some traffic to that Web site – much better than wasting 30 or 40 hours building a product nobody wants (trust me, that is VERY depressing.) The second method I recommend for testing a market is similar to the first, but when a visitor clicks on the order button, instead of saying “Oh well, too bad there's no product yet,” you put somebody else’s product in there. Find a product that is similar to what you plan to build. You might find another e-book product or maybe a physical product you can promote through Amazon.com or Walmart.com. Sites like those let you promote physical products and make a little bit of commission when people purchase. The commissions are lower than the typical digital product, but they will still help offset your advertising costs. Set up your test site and watch the sales. If a lot of people start buying, get busy and start creating your own related product. The third strategy for proving out a market (which I think is an excellent strategy) is something I just recently learned about. The core concept behind this marketing system is to sell a free product. Download the entire 7 Secrets of Profitable E-Books for FREE... Page 9
  • 10. 7 Secrets of Profitable E-Books I know that sounds like an oxymoron, 'selling a free product', but give me a minute to explain. You create a simple physical product like and audio recording or a short video. Nothing fancy, just a collection of solid tips or ideas on your topic. You package the content onto a DVD or audio CD using a low-cost print on demand service. And then tell your prospect they can have it for free if they are willing to pay the cost for shipping and handling. In the mind of the person who is ordering, it's a free product. And, you literally do give it for the cost of shipping and handling. But, what you’ve done in that process is bring a person to the point where they have to pull out a credit card to get the free product. Once they’ve done that, you know that this person makes purchases information online because they had to use their credit card to get some information. You've found a good, hot prospect (make sure you capture their name and email address to promote future products to them.) If you can talk on your topic for 45-60 minutes, you can easily create a product. Use a screen capture program like Camtasia to capture a PowerPoint presentation while you talk and you have a video that can be burned to a DVD. The audio can be burned to a CD. And, if you hire someone to transcribe your recording, you could even crank out a printed booklet. A service like Kunaki can handle print-on-demand fulfillment for DVD and CD products. For booklets, you may need to have them printed at a local copy shop and send them yourself while you run your test. Download the entire 7 Secrets of Profitable E-Books for FREE... Page 10
  • 11. 7 Secrets of Profitable E-Books The reason I truly love this method is that you can make these products quickly, get them out there easily, and find out instantly if you have a viable audience. Just sit back and see who actually pulls out their credit cards and orders the free product. Secret #2 – A Persuasive Salesletter... Want to learn all 7 Secrets to Profitable E-Books absolutely free?
