Patch has pretty much imploded, but at one point they were careening towards profitability with hundreds of sites. What went wrong? Providing information to local communities is a great thing, but Patch was based on the newspaper and TV business model, which does not work in the digital space. So, who will take their place? If you look at information in the broader since, Angie's list creates a sense of community and might be a replacement. However, Nextdoor comes closer to (and one ups) Patch. Nirav Tolia, co-founder of Nextdoor, has received $100 million in investment capital and is building out an interesting company with over 25k neighborhoods.
