The social penetration theory is the professional name for falling in love, again. As relationships develop, they penetrate deeper and deeper into all our private and personal matters. All this private information, the feelings from the heart, exposes us to vulnerabilities so a lot of trust must be developed along the way. Your evolutionary and wonderful mind takes you through stages of the heart, or it should be called stages of the mind. Your mind falls in love with another person, but not so quick. It takes time and energy and you cannot miss any of the steps of falling in love again. Most adults know a lot about the first stage of falling in love. It’s called the Orientation stage, here you play it safe, the small talk, the joke not too loud, the cup of coffee, meeting at the water cooler. Within the World of Aspirations series you can learn about this orientation stage, in complete detail. You spend most of your life with the opposite sex within some point of the orientation stage. Some of us call it flirting around. Small and simple talk, harmless conversations about clothes, school, children and education. The key word in orientation is harmless. You really give nothing and you really don’t expect anything in return, just flirting around. You follow all the norms of social standards, desirability and norms of appropriateness. You can think of a dozen people that flirt with you and you flirt with them, harmless adult play, not too serious, only having some fun and excitement causing no pain asking for nothing in return. The Exploratory Affective Stage is where we start to reveal the truth about ourselves which we want to do but fear is the speed bump. We go slow and the other person is doing the same. The fear is that they, the other person, will not like what or who you are so a lot of pretending takes place, a lot of false signals given to feel our way around. We start to express our attitudes on things, not all of them, we just simply give a glimpse of our thoughts, not too much, not too little. During exploratory we don’t tell the truth all the time, all fair in love and war theory. The exploratory affective stage can be compared to an unveiling of our thoughts, aspirations but not showing or revealing too much. It’s like your finger in the pudding, you just want a little taste and the other person is doing the same. This is the stepping stone of casual. That casual friend that you won’t remember their names if you change jobs, move across town or never see them again. You have so many friends over the years and you cannot remember their names, they all were in your exploratory affective stage. Most of the people you work with, attend Sunday school with, commute to work with are exploratory friends. A cup of coffee, a joke, some email at work and nothing more. They don’t come to your home, they don’t know were you live, they just know you in a casual way. Most people develop and sustain friends to this level. Now we start talking about everything. The job we love or hate, the cost of doing business, the favorite foods, money matters, pictures of friends and family. We talk about private and personal matters and we share secrets. Those things that nobody knows about you, the little things that built you, the things we all have and never speak of with another. When a person tells you things from the heart that’s what it means. You’re friend is speaking from trust and love and you are doing the same thing. As the information builds in your mind you start to explore all the options and try to look forward to the future. Is this the person I can wake up with in the morning. Do we like the same things and do we have the same values. As a child you learned many things, you favorite hot drink is hot chocolate. As an adult you look for that taste you like. How tall, how short, how fat, how skinny, now much money, what type of car, education, experience levels and the emotions that can be shared. This Affective Stage moves you to touching, a simple holding of the hands, a gentle kiss with nothing else to follow, it’s falling in love time, you’re still searching for that taste, that freedom and security at the same time, the words to describe, the music plays in the background all the time. It’s also a time of criticism and arguments about a number of things. You’re making some rules and roles. You’re still playing it safe but now you’re not playing. You’re also very afraid, something powerful and new is living inside you. You’re making choices now, you miss them when not around, you send letters and smiles, you talk about friends, family and past lovers. You’re making your bed.
