Easter Sunday – John 201-9

John 20:1-9

On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb.
So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them,
“ They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.”
So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb.
They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in.
When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there,

and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.
Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.
For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

Notice how Mary ran to Peter and “the other disciple.”
Clearly, Peter is recognized as the leader of the Apostles.
When John arrived at the tomb he didn’t go in, but why?
Peter was considered the leader an thus Peter would have the right to enter first.
Amazing, Peter had denied Jesus three times.
He must have told the other Apostles what had happened, yet he possessed the moral strength to do so, in fact he was a born leader.
Their first response must have been that grave robbers had been there.

Grave Robbers?
If grave-robbers had removed the body, why would they have taken the time to remove the burial garments?
The shroud was still in place as if the body had risen out of them.
The cloth that covered the head was in a different place.
If grave robbers had stolen the body they wouldn’t have taken the time to neatly re-arrange the burial clothes.
John was the first to “believe.”
He realized that the missing body was God’s work.

Disciple’s Love
Jesus improved Mary Magdalene’s life and removed seven demons. The effect was that she became a believer and followed Jesus where ever He went.
John the youngest of the apostles had the faith to risk his life by being at the foot of the cross.
Both Mary Magdalene and John had recognized Jesus’ hand working in their lives.
Naturally they returned to Jesus the love He had given them.
Mary was puzzled about what had happened at the tomb.
Jesus’ love gave John the ability to read the signs and the mind to understand their meaning.
