Do Tweets in aggregate provide the same type of information as Yelp reviews? A thoroughly unscientific study of one of my favorite restaurants in Boston's South End - Myers + Chang. In the end it appears that Tweets about a restaurant in aggregate appear the same as Yelp reviews about a restaurant in aggregate.

  • Are Shortform Twitter ‘Reviews’ equal to longform Yelp reviews?
    • Hypothesis: Yelp reviews of Myers+Chang in Boston (M+C) convey the same information in aggregate when compared to Tweets mentioning M+C.
    • by GoodEatsFor.Me
  • Process Steps:
    • Collection
      • Collect all Tweets from GE4M re: M+C. n=268
        • Db output to CSV file
      • Collect all Reviews from Yelp re: M+C. n=142
        • http://www.yelp.com/biz/myers-chang-boston
        • Page was then stripped of CSS / images ( http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/ )
    • Text Cleanup
      • Find/replace HTML elements / Headers / titles from Yelp data
      • Generate Wordclouds
        • Used Wordle.net to generate wordclouds for both data sets with upper limits of 50 and 150 words each across visualization
  • Myers+Chang: Top 50 words via Yelp
  • Myers+Chang: Top 50 words via Twitter
  • Myers+Chang: Top 150 words via Yelp
  • Myers+Chang: Top 150 words via Twitter
  • Findings and Conclusions
    • Word clouds told me same story
      • Both sets of word clouds had similar words in similar frequencies of occurrence
    • High volume short form content (Twitter) is equivalent to lower volume long form content (Yelp!)
      • And Twitter content tends to be more current
      • GoodEatsFor.Me makes sense of this content to quantify and analyze consumer recommendations
