High-frequency trading wields a growing amount of influence over the movement of the stock market. The totalvolume of trading in the U.S. stock market has escalated with the growth of high-frequency trading. The 2.8 billionshares traded every day in the U.S. stock market in 2000 have more than tripled to 8.5 billion shares traded per day in2010, according to the Tabb Group. Meanwhile, the SEC has lagged behind.
