Groepopdrag / Group Assignment 3
Analiseer 'n Moderne Westerse, Tradisionele Afrika
en Christelike wêreldbeskouing /
Analyse a Modern Western, Traditional African
and Christian worldview
Component Western African Christian
God A secular, materialistic,
capitalist god
Post-Christian
A Creator God who keeps
his distance
Does not demand
responsibility, supplanted
by an unpredictable
spiritual world
Pre-Christian
The personal God of the
Bible, Creator, Sustainer
and Supreme Authority
Christian
Norms Individual autonomy
Subjectivism (things are
laws)
Self-interest, individual
egotism
Communal autonomy
Subjectivism (the kinship
group is the rule)
Group interests, group
egotism
Heteronomy
God’s will, made
manifest in God’s
(directional and
structural) laws are
positivised in norms for
different areas of life
Man A (reductionist?)
anthropology characterised
by individualism,
materialism, hedonism, etc.
A (reductionist?)
anthropology in which one
aspect (the communal) is
absolutised and the individual
aspect is made subservient and
is suppressed
A multidimensional
anthropology: The
different aspects of
humanness ought to be
developed in a balanced
way
Community Atomistic-liberalistic:
Individual freedoms and rights
are given preference
Destroys communality and
eventually gives rise to
totalitarianism
Organistic-communalistic:
Communal equality and duties
get preference
Individuality is destroyed; it
gives rise directly to
totalitarianism
Individuality and
communality are
complementary facets of
the multidimensional
human being; both ought to
be developed in order to
develop individuals as well
as the community
Antitotalitarian
Nature Is regarded anthropocentrically:
Separated from man to be used
and exploited for prosperity
Is regarded holistically:
Man is part of nature and for
this reason nature must be
respected and should not be
interfered with
Is regarded Biblically:
Distinguishes man from
nature, yet does not
separate man from nature
Ought to use and protect
nature as a good steward
Time and
history
A commodity to measure and
use to your own advantage
Future-oriented (progress)
It is something to share and to
enjoy with others
Past-oriented (repristination)
God-given gift to use and
enjoy in a responsible way
Past, present and future are
equally important

& TABLE ON PG 18
Ses komponente van ‘n Morderne
Westerse wêreldbeskouing /
Six components of a Modern Western
worldview
1. Concept of God
2. Normative Concepts
wereldbeskouing:
denke, net goeie kompetisie.
3. View of Humanity
– Very reductionist view of man. Humans not
multidimensional and only have an:
– Economic substance, or
– Individualistic existence or
– Rational-scientific nature, or
– Consumer (Needs must be met immediately)
4. View of society
– West's individualistic view of persons leads to an
individualistic view of community life
– Individualism focuses firstly on individual freedom
and equality; individuals are more important than
the group [individual > group]
– Result is that social relationships such as family,
marriage and government are regarded as
artificial; human autonomy is more important
than these relationships
– Individualism focuses all human activities on
promoting the individual and his / her rights!
– There is an atomistic individualistic relationship
between the individual and social groups
5. View of nature
– In the modern Western world view, nature is seen as
something separate from humanity, as humanity's
opponent.
– This view leads to the idea that nature must be
conquered, used and even exploited for the benefit of
humanity.
6. View of Time & History
– The Western concept of time is that time
is a commodity ("Time is money")
• It is outside a person; a person must pass through it; one
should use it and fill it
• It is abstract, independent of ordinary life; is measured and
determined by a clock
– The implications of this view of time are:
• It reduces man to a slave of time; "rat-race" leads to strained
relations and alienation amongst people
• Positive: Leads to planning and scheduling
• The view has both benefits (punctuality) and disadvantages
(Westerners do not know to enjoy time)
TIME IS MONEY: VIDEO CLIP
Ses komponente van ‘n Tradisionele Afrika
wêreldbeskouing / Six components of a
Traditional African worldview
1. Concept of God
• A creator God (Supreme Being) who is at a distance and
not interested in creation.
• Worldview is holistic; Creator is difficult to separate
from physical and spiritual.
• Does not require worship and is only approached in
cases of severe crisis.
• Replaced by unpredictable spirit world.
• Pre-Christian.
2. Normative Concepts
• Strong focus on society (in all of existence, religion, humanity,
norms, time, etc).
• "Law of kinship" determines what is good and what is bad.
• Subjectivist in terms of group, not universal standards for all
people (group egotism).
• “Ubuntu”.
3. View of Humanity
• Communal absolutised (compare with
individual Western world view), so the social
group is more important than the individual.
• One "becomes
human"
by belonging
to community
4. View of Society
• Includes not only the living, but also the ancestors.
• Organistic-communalistic: Communal duties are
central, individuality less important.
5. View of Nature
• Creator and creation are not distinguished
(physical and spiritual world overlap).
• Natural holistic view:
Humans are part of
nature, therefore
nature should be
respected
• Time is something to
share and enjoy with
others (cannot be
separated from social).
• Must make time for
other members of group.
• It’s not about quantity,
but quality (have to wait
for the right time for a
specific purpose)
6. View of Time & History
TRADITIONAL VS WESTERN VIDEO CLIP
Six components of a Christian worldview /
Ses komponente van ‘n Christelike
werêldbeskouing
2. Normatiewe Konsepte
• Rigtinggewend & Struktureel
• God se wil wat in God se wette geopenbaar
word, is in norme vir verskillende lewensareas
gepositiviseer.
• Die Bybel
3. Beskouing van Die Mens
• Geskep in beeld van God
• Struktureel dieselfde as God, en die mens moet
hom/haarself op God rig
4. Beskouing van Gemeenskap
• Individualiteit en kommunaliteit is
komplementêre fasette van die multi-
dimensionele mens
• “Rentmeesterskap”
Nie aanbidding
Nie eksploitasie
6. Beskouing van Tyd & Geskiedenis
• Geskenk van God (moet op ‘n
verantwoordelike manier gebruik word en
geniet word)
• Verlede, hede en toekoms is ewe belangrik

  • 15. Ses komponente van ‘n Morderne Westerse wêreldbeskouing / Six components of a Modern Western worldview
  • 19. 3. View of Humanity – Very reductionist view of man. Humans not multidimensional and only have an: – Economic substance, or – Individualistic existence or – Rational-scientific nature, or – Consumer (Needs must be met immediately)
  • 20. 4. View of society – West's individualistic view of persons leads to an individualistic view of community life – Individualism focuses firstly on individual freedom and equality; individuals are more important than the group [individual > group] – Result is that social relationships such as family, marriage and government are regarded as artificial; human autonomy is more important than these relationships – Individualism focuses all human activities on promoting the individual and his / her rights! – There is an atomistic individualistic relationship between the individual and social groups
  • 21. 5. View of nature – In the modern Western world view, nature is seen as something separate from humanity, as humanity's opponent. – This view leads to the idea that nature must be conquered, used and even exploited for the benefit of humanity.
  • 22. 6. View of Time & History – The Western concept of time is that time is a commodity ("Time is money") • It is outside a person; a person must pass through it; one should use it and fill it • It is abstract, independent of ordinary life; is measured and determined by a clock – The implications of this view of time are: • It reduces man to a slave of time; "rat-race" leads to strained relations and alienation amongst people • Positive: Leads to planning and scheduling • The view has both benefits (punctuality) and disadvantages (Westerners do not know to enjoy time)
  • 23. TIME IS MONEY: VIDEO CLIP
  • 24. Ses komponente van ‘n Tradisionele Afrika wêreldbeskouing / Six components of a Traditional African worldview
  • 25. 1. Concept of God • A creator God (Supreme Being) who is at a distance and not interested in creation. • Worldview is holistic; Creator is difficult to separate from physical and spiritual. • Does not require worship and is only approached in cases of severe crisis. • Replaced by unpredictable spirit world. • Pre-Christian.
  • 26. 2. Normative Concepts • Strong focus on society (in all of existence, religion, humanity, norms, time, etc). • "Law of kinship" determines what is good and what is bad. • Subjectivist in terms of group, not universal standards for all people (group egotism). • “Ubuntu”.
  • 27. 3. View of Humanity • Communal absolutised (compare with individual Western world view), so the social group is more important than the individual. • One "becomes human" by belonging to community
  • 28. 4. View of Society • Includes not only the living, but also the ancestors. • Organistic-communalistic: Communal duties are central, individuality less important.
  • 29. 5. View of Nature • Creator and creation are not distinguished (physical and spiritual world overlap). • Natural holistic view: Humans are part of nature, therefore nature should be respected
  • 30. • Time is something to share and enjoy with others (cannot be separated from social). • Must make time for other members of group. • It’s not about quantity, but quality (have to wait for the right time for a specific purpose) 6. View of Time & History
  • 32. Six components of a Christian worldview / Ses komponente van ‘n Christelike werêldbeskouing
