These slides are used to explain the idea of summary writing. Students are expected to go through the 4 stages of summary writing and from there, write their summary based on the new O Level English Language syllabus based on their own words.

  • 6. Where is the area of passage to be summarised? What do you need to summarise? How many parts are there to answer? What is the word limit? 1 2 3 4
  • 7. What is the purpose of summary? Whose point of view do you write the summary in? First or third person? Does the number of opening words include or exclude the summary?
  • 8. Description Cause and Effect Comparison Sequence of Events Persuasive Arguments Chronologically Mix of 2 or more Others What is the purpose of summary?
  • 9. Do I write in first or third person? First Third
  • 10. Does the number of opening words include or exclude the summary?
  • 11. Mark off the area of the passage for summary
  • 12. Find relevant points for the question Highlight the relevant points Number them

  • 14. Sentences which highlight the points which have been or will be made in the paragraph. Found usually at the start or at the end of the paragraph.
  • 15. Connectors Synonyms or synonymous phrases Sentence Structure
  • 16. Combine the content points to write a coherent summary in complete sentences.
  • 17. Arrange your points in a logical order according to purpose. Use a variety of sentence structure Write your summary in a paragraph only
