09. What Are Gods Purposes In The Gospel For Me

 1. 1. Living the Gospel
 2. 2. Living the Gospel

Living in the kingdom of God.

Living a life of continuous repentance and faith.

Preaching the Gospel to yourself every day.

 3. 3. Another Thought

Preaching the Gospel to yourself every day and encouraging others with the gospel whenever possible.

 4. 4. What are God’s Purposes in the Gospel for Me?
 5. 5. God’s Purposes for Me

To be His Child

To Follow and Obey Jesus

To Become Like Jesus

 6. 6. To be His Child
 7. 7. Children of God

Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

1 John 3:2

 8. 8. To Follow and Obey Jesus
 9. 9. Follow Jesus

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

John 10:27

 10. 10. Follow Jesus Only

For some members of Chloe’s household have told me about your quarrels, my dear brothers and sisters. Some of you are saying, “I am a follower of Paul.” Others are saying, “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Peter,” or “I follow only Christ.” Has Christ been divided into factions? Was I, Paul, crucified for you? Were any of you baptized in the name of Paul? Of course not!

1 Corinthians 1:11-13 (NLT)

 11. 11. Obey Jesus

But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.”

Matthew 17:5 (NLT)

 12. 12. Follow Jesus = Disciple

And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.

Luke 14:27 (NLT)

 13. 13. Obey Jesus = Disciple

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:19-20 (NLT)

 14. 14. Meaning of “Disciple”

The word disciple is a translation of the Greek word mathetes . The ways this word can be translated are pupil, learner, apprentice, or follower.

These meanings give us our basic understanding of the word “disciple”. A disciple is one who learns from another.

 15. 15. Disciples in Jesus’ Day

A disciple was not only a learner, but someone who had a close relationship with the teacher and was in continual fellowship with him. They experience life together and through their interaction the disciple was changed and became like his master.

 16. 16. Radical Requirements

“ If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.

Luke 14:26 (NLT)

 17. 17. What is the Most Important Commandment?
 18. 18. Most Important Commandment

“ Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

Matthew 22:36-40 (NLT)

 19. 19. How Do We Love God?
 20. 20. How We Love God

Worship Him

Obey Him

Serve Him

 21. 21. Worship God But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. John 4:23 (NLT)
 22. 22. Worship God And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Romans 12:1 (NLT)
 23. 23. Obey God If you love me, obey my commandments. John 14:15 (NLT)
 24. 24. Serve God Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Romans 12:11 (NLT)
 25. 25. Serve God for they keep talking about the wonderful welcome you gave us and how you turned away from idols to serve the living and true God. 1 Thessalonians 1:9
 26. 26. How Do We Love Others?
 27. 27. Love Others Agape – a sacrificial love that seeks God’s best for others. It is a love of the will rather than the emotions. Counterfeit: Helping others but only because it benefits you.
 28. 28. Love Others For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. Galatians 5:13 (NLT)
 29. 29. Love Others Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God. Ephesians 5:1-2 (NLT)
 30. 30. Love Others God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 1 Peter 4:10 (NLT)
 31. 31. What is Our Destiny?
 32. 32. To Become like Jesus
 33. 33. To Become Like Jesus

For whom He foreknew, He also

predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Romans 8:29

 34. 34. To Become Like Jesus

But we all, with unveiled face,

beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 3:18

 35. 35. To Become Like Jesus

Oh, my dear children! I feel as if I’m going through labor pains for you again, and they will continue until Christ is fully developed in your lives.

Galatians 4:19 (NLT)

 36. 36. What does it mean to be like Jesus?
 37. 37. What does it mean to be like Jesus?

Being like Jesus means to have the heart, mind and character of Jesus and to live like He did.

 38. 38. Character of Jesus “ Discipleship should be understood as a whole life process where “the inmost being of the individual takes on the quality or character of Jesus himself.” Dallas Willard
 39. 39. Character of Jesus “ The ultimate purpose of the Holy Spirit’s work in Christians is not just to give us general comfort or strength, but to change our character into that of Jesus.” Tim Keller
 40. 40. Calvin and Hobbes
 41. 41. What is Character? “ Character is what a man is in the dark”. D. L. Moody
 42. 42. What is Character? Character is the standard within us which governs our moral choices. Christ-like character implies that we make our moral choices based on what Jesus says is right.
 43. 43. Character of Jesus But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control… Galatians 5:22-23
 44. 44. Importance of Character We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. Romans 5:3-4 (NLT)
 45. 45. Importance of Character

I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.

Philippians 1:10-11 (NLT)

 46. 46. Importance of Character

But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the Gospel.

Philippians 2:22

 47. 47. Importance of Character In the same way, deacons must be well respected and have integrity. They must not be heavy drinkers or dishonest with money. They must be committed to the mystery of the faith now revealed and must live with a clear conscience. Before they are appointed as deacons, let them be closely examined. If they pass the test, then let them serve as deacons. 1 Timothy 3:8-10 (NLT)
 48. 48. Importance of Character He who walks with integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will become known. The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. Proverbs 10:9 and 11:3
 49. 49. Importance of Character May integrity and honesty protect me, for I put my hope in you. Declare me innocent, O Lord, for I have acted with integrity; I have trusted in the Lord without wavering. (read whole Psalm) Psalm 25:21 and 26:1
 50. 50. Importance of Character Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts. Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends. Those who despise flagrant sinners, and honor the faithful followers of the Lord, and keep their promises even when it hurts. Psalm 15:1-4 (NLT)
 51. 51. Grow in Character By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. 2 Peter 1:3-4 (NLT)
 52. 52. Grow in Character In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. 2 Peter 1:5-7 (NLT)
 53. 53. Grow in Character The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins. 2 Peter 1:8-9 (NLT)
 54. 54. What Did Jesus Do?
 55. 55. What Jesus Did

He did the will of the Father not His own, He denied himself.

He depended on the power of the Holy Spirit through the Father.

He studied and meditated on the Word of God.

He spent time alone in prayer with the Father.

 56. 56. What Jesus Did

He loved others sacrificially, He gave of Himself to help others.

He called people to repent and turn back to God.

He made disciples, He spent time helping others to grow spiritually.

 57. 57. What God Uses

Three Main Things

Holy Spirit – importance of prayer

His Word – importance of study

His People – importance of fellowship and accountability
