  • 2. IMAGES OUT OF THE ORDINARYABOUT THESE IMAGESTHE JERWOOD GALLERY OPENED ON 17 MARCH 2012 IN HASTINGS, A SMALL SEASIDE RESORT ON BRITAIN’SSOUTH COAST. HAILED BY MANY AS AN IMPORTANT CATALYST FOR REGENERATION, BUT ALSO OPPOSED BYSOME LOCALS, IT WAS DESIGNED BY THE YOUNG ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE HAT PROJECTS TO HOUSE THEJERWOOD FOUNDATION’S ART COLLECTION. THE BUILDING ITSELF WAS INSPIRED BY THE TALL BLACK SHEDSTHAT WERE USED BY FISHERMEN TO DRY THEIR NETS AND IS CLAD IN OVER 8,000 BLACK CERAMIC TILES. IWAS THERE ON OPENING DAY. IT WAS A WET GREY DAY, BUT ONCE INSIDE THE GALLERY THERE WAS A LOT TOADMIRE. THE DESIGN IS STYLISH AND SIMPLISTIC, A SERIES OF INTIMATE SPACES OVER TWO FLOORS ANDTHE COLLECTION ITSELF WAS A PLEASANT SURPRISE: I LIKED MANY OF PAINTINGS. I ALSO LIKED THE WAYVARIOUS WINDOWS OF THE BUILDING FRAMED THE OUTSIDE WORLD AS IF THEY WERE LIVING ARTWORKS.THESE IMAGES, HAMPERED A LITTLE BY THE RAINY WEATHER, CAN ONLY GIVE A FLAVOUR OF THE GALLERYAND SOME OF ITS CONTENTS. THE LOOK I’VE GIVEN THE IMAGES OF THE BUILDING WAS INFLUENCED BY THEJERWOOD’S OWN COLOUR PALETTE, BUT THE IMAGES OF THE ART ARE UNTOUCHED AND ARE STRAIGHT OUTTHE CAMERA. I WAS ESPECIALLY TAKEN BY THE WORK OF ROSE WYLIE, A 78-YEAR-OLD ARTIST FROM KENTWHOSE HUGE CANVASES FORMED THE GALLERY’S LAUNCH EXHIBITION. I HOPE YOU LIKE WHAT YOU SEE AND,WHO KNOWS, IF YOU EVER VENTURE TO EAST SUSSEX, THESE IMAGES MIGHT EVEN INSPIRE YOU TO PAY AVISIT TO THE JERWOOD!INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY NOTICEIN ADDITION TO THE VARIOUS NAMED ARTISTS WHOSE WORK IS INCLUDED HERE, THE IMAGES CONTAINED IN THISPRESENTATION WERE CREATED BY GARY MARLOWE AND, WHILST BEING AVAILABLE FOR VIEWING ONSLIDESHARE, THEY REMAIN THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OF GARY MARLOWE© GARY MARLOWE | 2012 gary marlowe
