  • 2. IMAGES OUT OF THE ORDINARYABOUT THESE IMAGESPRIOR TO VISITING THE BRAND NEW JERWOOD GALLERY IN HASTINGS, I’D NEVER EVEN HEARD OF ROSEWYLIE AND, TO BE HONEST, WHEN I FIRST SAW HER WORK I THOUGHT IT LOOKED LIKE SOMETHING A SCHOOLCHILD MIGHT HAVE PRODUCED. HOWEVER, WHEN I FOUND OUT SHE WAS ACTUALLY 78, I THOUGHT I’D TAKEA CLOSER LOOK. AND YOU KNOW WHAT? SOMETHING ABOUT HER WORK BEGAN TO APPEAL TO ME. IT WAS ACOMBINATION OF THE COLOURS, THE SPONTANEITY OF THE BRUSHWORK AND THE MIX OF CARTOONCHARACTERS AND SCRAWLED HANDWRITING. AND THE MORE I LOOKED, THE MORE I LIKED. SO MUCH SOTHAT I DECIDED TO SHARE HER WORK. THOSE OF YOU WHO FOLLOW ME WILL NOTICE STRAIGHT AWAY THATTHESE IMAGES ARE UNTREATED, INDEED THEY’RE RIGHT OUT OF THE CAMERA. THE ONLY THING I’D SAY, ISTHEY ARE ALL SECTIONS OF ROSE’S PAINTINGS, NONE ARE THE COMPLETE FRAME. I WAS ONLY AT THEGALLERY FOR A FEW HOURS AND AT THE TIME I’D CHOSEN ONLY TO HIGHLIGHT THOSE ELEMENTS OF HERPAINTINGS WHICH I PARTICULARLY LIKED. LATER I FOUND OUT ROSE IS NOW BEING TALKED ABOUT AS ONEOF BRITAIN’S BEST UP AND COMING ARTISTS. I THINK SHE IS ACTUALLY ONE OF THE MOST ORIGINALPAINTERS I’VE SEEN IN A LONG TIME AND WHILST HER INDIFFERENCE TO PERFECTION IS COUNTER-INTUITIVEAND THE OPPOSITE OF MY OWN APPROACH TO IMAGES, THERE’S SOMETHING REFRESHING ABOUT THE NIAIVEWAY SHE PAINTS AND THE SUBJECTS SHE CHOOSES TO PORTRAY. I ALSO THINK HER WORK IS VERYCOMMERCIAL AND CAN EASILY SEE HER CHARACTERS APPEARING ON MERCHANDISE AND EVEN BEINGTURNED INTO ANIMATED STORIES. IF THIS GLIMPSE INTO ROSE’S WORK HAS APPEALED TO YOU, THEN YOU’LLNEED TO GET DOWN TO HASTINGS TO SEE THE PAINTINGS FOR YOURSELF!INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY NOTICEALL THE ARTWORKS INCLUDED HERE ARE PHOTOS OF SECTIONS OF ORIGINAL PAINTINGS BY ROSE WYLIE. ALLTHE IMAGES CONTAINED IN THIS PRESENTATION WERE CREATED BY GARY MARLOWE AND, WHILST BEINGAVAILABLE FOR VIEWING ON SLIDESHARE, THEY REMAIN THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OF GARY MARLOWE.© GARY MARLOWE | 2012 gary marlowe
