ON NOVEMBER 5TH, SOME 60,000 PEOPLE DESCEND ON LEWES (WHICH ITSELF ONLY HAS 16,000 INHABITANTS) TO WATCH WHAT IS ONE OF ENGLAND’S MOST SPECTACULAR TRADITIONS: THE BONFIRE PROCESSION. WITH SHOPS BOARDED UP AND THE STREETS PACKED WITH REVELLERS, THE EVENING GETS UNDERWAY WITH A BARREL RACE WHICH CULMINATES WITH A FLAMING TAR BARREL BEING THROWN FROM THE BRIDGE INTO THE RIVER OUSE. THE TOWN’S SEVEN BONFIRE SOCIETIES, ALL DRESSED IN THEIR DIFFERENTLY COLOURED STRIPED SMUGGLERS JUMPERS AND WHITE TROUSERS AS WELL AS EACH SOCIETIES TRADITIONAL PIONEER COSTUMES, THEN BEGIN A TORCHLIT PARADE THROUGH THE TOWN. THEY ARE JOINED BY VISITING SOCIETIES AND MARCHING BANDS. THE NOISE IS DEAFENING, THE AIR THICK WITH SMOKE AND LIT BY FLARES. WITH THOUSANDS TAKING PART AND THE DARK NARROW STREETS CRAMMED TO THE GUNNELS, THE ATMOSPHERE IS BOTH MENACING AND CELEBRATORY, ORGANISED AND CHAOTIC, HUMOROUS AND SCARY. IT’S ALSO A NIGHTMARE TO PHOTOGRAPH! THESE IMAGES AIM TO CAPTURE THE FIERY SPLENDOUR OF WHAT THE TELEGRAPH BRILLIANTLY DESCRIBED AS BEING ‘A HEAD ON COLLISION BETWEEN HALLOWEEN AND MARDI GRAS.’
