  • 2. IMAGES OUT OF THE ORDINARYABOUT THESE IMAGESMY FIRST REAL EXPOSURE TO AUDEMARS PIGUET CAME AT SALON PRIVÉ IN 2011 WHEN I PHOTOGRAPHED ANUMBER OF THEIR WATCHES. HELD AT SYON PARK, SALON PRIVÉ IS A SHOWCASE FOR THE MOST EXCLUSIVESUPERCARS AS WELL AS A HANDFUL OF LUXURY BRANDS. THIS TIME, RATHER THAN HAVING TO SHOOTTHROUGH GLASS SHOWCASES, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PHOTOGRAPH TWO OF THEIR MOSTEXCEPTIONAL WATCHES ON A PRESENTATION TRAY. I HAD NO LIGHTS WITH ME AND ONLY A FEW MINUTESWITH EACH WATCH SO I WAS LIMITED AS TO WHAT I COULD DO. I CHOSE TWO VERY DIFFERENT WATCHES,ONE IN ROSE GOLD, THE OTHER IN BLACK CARBON. EACH WAS PARTICULARLY INTERESTING AND BOTHEXTREMELY COMPLEX, SOMETHING THAT CAN ONLY BE APPRECIATED WHEN YOU GET TO SEE THEM UP CLOSETHROUGH A MACRO LENS. I’M A HUGE ADMIRER OF THE BRAND AND LOVE THE CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT GOESINTO PRODUCING AN AUDEMARS PIGUET TIMEPIECE, ALL OF WHICH ARE INDIVIDUALLY ASSEMBLED BY HAND,OFTEN PRODUCED BY A SINGLE WATCHMAKER OVER MANY MONTHS. I THINK THESE TWO WATCHES ARESTUNNING TO LOOK AT. I HOPE YOU LIKE HOW I’VE PORTRAYED THEM.INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY NOTICETHE IMAGES CONTAINED IN THIS PRESENTATION WERE CREATED BY GARY MARLOWE AND, WHILST BEINGAVAILABLE FOR VIEWING ON SLIDESHARE, THEY REMAIN THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OF GARY MARLOWE© GARY MARLOWE | 2012 gary marlowe

  • 4. THE ROYAL OAKCELEBRATING ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2012, THE OCTAGONAL ROYAL OAK IS AUDEMARS PIGUET’S MOSTFAMOUS MODEL. THE WATCH GOT ITS NAME FROM THREE OF BRITAIN’S ROYAL NAVY WARSHIPS WHICHINSPIRED ITS PORTHOLE DESIGN. THIS VERSION IS THE EQUATION OF TIME AND IS IN 18 CT ROSE GOLD. ITTAKES 423 HAND-ASSEMBLED PARTS TO DRIVE THE EQUATION OF TIME, SUNRISE, SUNSET, PERPETUALCALENDAR AND ASTRONOMICAL MOON PHASE. THE WATCH FEATURES A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT HAND-POLISHED FINISHES: THE SIDE OF THE BEZEL IS POLISHED, WHILE THE UPPER SURFACE IS SATIN-BRUSHEDAND MATT. I PARTICULARLY LIKE THE WAY THE ENGRAVED ‘GRAND TAPISSERIE’ DESIGN ON THE DIALCAPTURES THE LIGHT. IT COSTS £71,370

  • 10. THE MILLENARYSINCE FIRST SEEING THE MILLENARY IN 2011, THIS WATCH WITH ITS UNIQUE OVOID SHAPE AND OFFSET DIALHAS BECOME A PERSONAL FAVOURITE. I LIKE HOW AUDEMARS RETAIN A CORE DESIGN BUT THEN CREATENUMEROUS VARIANTS IN THE WAY IT IS STYLED. THIS IS DOWN TO THE IMAGINATION OF ARTISTIC DIRECTOR,OCTAVIO GARCIA. THE INSPIRATION FOR THE MILLENARYS SHAPE CAME FROM THE COLISEUM IN ROME, BUTTHIS SKELETON VERSION, WITH ITS FORGED CARBON AND VISUAL NOD TO SPORTS CAR INSTRUMENTS,REALLY CAUGHT MY EYE. WITH ITS EXQUISITELY EXPOSED MECHANISM AND MULTIPLE DISPLAYS, ITS THREE-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN IS A THING OF BEAUTY AND MANAGES TO DO SOMETHING THAT IS RARELY ACHIEVED:TO FUSE TRADITION WITH HIGH-TECH. THIS IS A LIMITED EDITION WITH JUST 120 PIECES BEING HAND-CRAFTED. LOOKING AT THE INCREDIBLE DETAIL, IT’S NO WONDER IT COSTS IN EXCESS OF £150,000.
