THE POP EXPLOSION Characteristics: a) songs are simple, memorable and emotionally appealing to sell to large audiences b) closely linked to the social identity of its performers and audiences c) frequently deals with the theme of romantic love d) delivered to markets in inexpensive formats, such as records and CDs e) danceable Types of popular music: *jazz, film music, musicals, country, soul, rock and rap Important facts: a) Motown- most important record label of pop music in the 60s. It was staffed from top to bottom by African Americans( black) b) Tin Pan Alley-small area of New York City where songwriters, publishers, producers and artists lived. c) Madonna-female pop icon of the 80s. She manages to keep herself in the forefront of pop music by constantly adopting new looks and new sounds. d) Michael Jackson-king of pop. • received 8 Grammy awards in ‘83 • Thriller album is the biggest selling album of all time • Beat it-song of the year in ‘83 e) Teen pop- lightweight pop music aimed directly at a young audience. f) Boy bands-manufactured specifically to appeal to young girls. Typically, 4-5 young men, handpicked for their dancing ability, voices, and most important of all, their looks. g) 1970s-disco music h) 1980s- rap music -digital recording becomes available; introduction of CDs i) 1990s-internet users begin downloading music onto their PC -rise of the DIVA(female singers like Celine Dion achieved superstar status)

Heavy Metal Style- Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath 2. Queen- combined influences from classical music and displays of technical skills Rock music began in the US and was influenced by white musicians
