In the last two years, the number of consumers inthe 31 GlobalWebIndex markets using a mobile to get online has grown by 60%. Those accessing throughtablets has grown by over 282% to reach 302 MM people (aged 16 to 64)!• Google’s Android OS has grown to become the dominant smartphone OS globally with its penetration amongsmartphone users expected to reach 80% by 2016. iOS, the iPhone OS, still maintains a strong position in somekey markets including the US, Canada, and Australia with about a third of smartphone users using iOS.• Smartphones are becoming ubiquitous among internet users globally. Income is not a key factor in whethersomeone is a smartphone owner, but they do tend to be younger and slightly more male. This makes it criticalthat we focus on how the behaviour varies across the different target audiences we’re after in order to connectwith them.• The tablet market is distinct from the smartphone market in that Android does not yet completely dominate interms of device usage, and tablet users also tend to be more middle-aged, wealthier, and more male thanaverage. They are also far more fashionable and more likely to engage with brands online.• Web consumption also varies significantly depending on device. While the most popular activities are equallypopular across devices, it is tablet users who are most likely to consume online content and be more activeonline in general via their devices.• As far as apps are concerned, gaming is by far the most popular category of apps. Location and social apps arealso among the most used types of apps in the world with Google Maps and Facebook leading the way.
