PACIFIC 1.8% freshwater 70 % population 2,093 m³/person ATLANTIC 97.7% Freshwater 26% population 211,284 m³/person TITICACA .5% freshwater 4% population 10,174 m³/ person Water Security in Peru Peru has 4.6% of the world´s freshwater , yet 2/3 of Peruvians live on the edge of water stress in the economically vital Pacific Basin
  • 3. Water Insecurity in Peru
    • Water availability is declining in some areas, such as the Chancay-Lambayeque Basin in N. Peru that has seen a 63% decline in three decades.
    • In other areas, such as the Arma-Chichas watershed of Arequipa, farmers expect that the Coropuna glacier melt currently used to plant crops will disappear in the next 25 years.
    Our regional insecurity is compounded by unequal water rights, wasteful use practices and poor infrastructure .

    Borrowing Water is time consuming and leads to social conflicts. Small-holders are dependent on the water rights of large land-holders
  • 5. Highland Peru : Chronic Poverty, Food Insecurity, Rudimentary Irrigation Systems
  • 6. WASTE WATER RE-USE IN LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION
    • 2,000 HECTARES RECOVERED BY LANDLESS POPULATION.
    • IRRIGATION AND DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS, ALFALFA & FORRAGE PLANTED
    • YEAR ROUND USE OF CHICLAYO´S WASTE WATER FOR ALFALFA, FEED CORN AND SORGHUM CROPS.
    • TREATED WASTE WATER RESOURCES ARE ADMINISTERED BY THE COMMUNITY, VIA LOCAL MANAGERS.
    • THIS IS NOT AN ENGINEERING FEAT. SUCCESS IS DUE TO SOCIAL ORGANIZATION OF PRODUCTION AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION. CES SOLIDARIDAD PLAYED A KEY ROLE

    • 2,000 HECTARES OF BARREN LAND MADE PRODUCTIVE
    • CREATION OF RURAL JOBS FOR LANDLESS: 4,000 WORKERS (2 per hectare).
    • IMPROVED FOOD SECURITY ; SALES OF MILK PRODUCTS
    • REDUCTION OF POVERTY LEVELS. INCOME IMPROVEMENT OF US$ 500/monthly.
    • HEIGHTENED LAND VALUE: 1 HECTARE = US $ 5,000
    • IMPROVED SANITATION PRACTICES, TRASH REMOVAL ON FARM LAND AND NEARBY BEACHES.
