Judging from all the emails we have received and the posting above we as a collective of employers, government and society have a job to do in order to ensure that New Zealand can get back to some sort of parity before thinking about moving forward. New Zealand has slipped down the OECD rankings for GDP per capita and there is now a ’taskforce’ to try and sort this out. This will all be in vain if we cannot keep our skilled workers here and attract and retain great talent from overseas. Pay parity, breaking xenophobia, encouraging creativty and building a value based culture (rather than cost plus) are what needs to happen.

For the record it is a myth that 1million Kiwis live overseas the figure is closer to 500,000 and statistics New Zealand have written a myth buster piece on it!

    Is this a joke?
First of all, there are more then ONE MILLION Kiwis who have fled New Zealand - and with good reason. Under the 'Tall Poppy Syndrome' they must ’dumb themselves down’ just to get a job in New Zealand. And should they ever complain about the horrible treatment they receive from the brutally mindless thugs that pretend to be ’middle managers’ in NZ they are frozen out of the work force completely.
And yet I have Kiwi friends quitting their jobs every day and fleeing the country – without even having new jobs lined up in advance. They just cannot take the abuse anymore.
As a foreigner with more then two years living and NOT working in New Zealand, I can tell you all about racism - prejudice - and bigotry of Kiwi companies against foreigner ’skilled migrants’ first hand.
It means that if you have any knowledge or real skills in your field - you are treated like ’filth’ by kiwi middle managers, who have seized control of Kiwi corporations.
I have 24 years experience in my field, and have been told the reasons I cannot have a job in New Zealand are: 'you are too over qualified' - 'you are a foreigner (we would NEVER hire a foreigner - we would rather the job go empty!)' - 'you are an American (we would NEVER hire an American - and that from a government Ministry)'.
The phrase 'too over qualified' should be the New Zealand national anthem, as EVERY foreigner has heard it, over and over and over again. And it is the prime reason that a majority of highly skilled migrants leave New Zealand after being here for less then two weeks – you can only hear this mindlessly stupid and arrogant statement so many times - and I can assure you, they NEVER come back. And those self same rejected skiled migrants are even now spreading the truth about what 'living and working' in New Zealand really means.
You think you have labour shortages now? Brother, you ain’t see nothing yet!!!
And 'Working Holiday Visa' workers? They are treated and paid like slaves, when they are paid at all.
The other favorite Kiwi phase used by the thuggish middle managers here (when they are caught cheating you) is 'you should just be happy to be here!'
I have yet to see this 'quality of life' thing here, as the native Kiwis don’t like us (true, they don’t like each other either), we are brutalized at work (when we can find work), and jobs that pay real money are given to the cronies and buddies of the middle management thugs without even going out for tender!!!! I have friends-in-low-places who have seen this with their own eyes, and they have paid the price.
I have personally written to the new PM - responding to his call for even MORE laws to help 'skilled IT professionals' to immigrate to New Zealand. I pointed out to Mr. Key that we are ALREADY HERE and that we are frozen out of the market because WE KNOW HOW TO DO OUR JOBS!!! I received a response letter from Mr. Key’s office that was very Kiwi: empty - totally vacuous.
So you want to lure even more victims into this trap????? Those of us who have managed to survive here at all would like first chance at these skilled jobs you are talking about…since I personally have already lost everything in the world I owned by coming here (after listening to the lies told by the New Zealand government, corporations, recruiters, etc., for years) and not being able to even have a real job - I’d actually like to have a real job – finally.

New Zealands Silent Talent Crisis - Presentation Transcript

  1. EXPOSING NEW ZEALAND’S SILENT AND LOOMING TALENT CRISIS FACTS NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED
  2. Over the last 20 years New Zealand has become a knowledge economy 160 Education standards have Post and school qualified workers increased dramatically 140 across New Zealand’s work 120 force over the last 20 years 100 – which is great – 80 good on us (000’s) 60 40 20 0 65+ 20-24 25-29 30-34 35-39 40-44 45-49 50-54 55-59 60-64 Jun-09 Jun-90 Source: Statistics New Zealand, Global Career Link analysis
  3. The increasing education standards have allowed greater global mobility 25.0% EXPATS AS A PERCENTAGE OF And boy have NZ’ers taken that to 20.0% heart – we have the greatest rate NATIVE BORN of highly skilled expats living 15.0% abroad of all OECD countries 10.0% 5.0% 0.0% AUT GBR HUN AUS IRL LUX NZL BEL CAN FRA Total population Highly skilled So everyone gets a great and rounded education then leaves – Source: OECD, Statistics NZ, Global Career Link analysis over 500,000 kiwis overseas
  4. Recently the leaving has slowed – global recession and all – and things had tightened in NZ Net migration back from Australia Not as many departures to the UK Average unemployment 6%
  5. But all these were averages and averages are for average people – Mr Global decided to do some digging around… …and this is what he found
  6. 6% unemployment isn’t all that it seems – considering the ‘recession’ Unemployment is still at or below the group for school and post school 12.0 Unemployment rate by age 10.0 15 year average in core employment 8.0 demographics qualified 6.0 4.0 2.0 - Current rate Average (last 15 years) Average (last five years) Source: Statistics New Zealand, Global Career Link analysis
  7. The better education is a double edge sword – talent will be scarce again 160 Four times more Post and school qualified workers qualified workers leaving 140 than entering over the 120 next 15 years 100 (000’s) 80 60 40 20 0 20-24 25-29 30-34 35-39 40-44 45-49 50-54 55-59 60-64 65+ Jun-09 Jun-90 Source: Statistics New Zealand, Global Career Link analysis
  8. How scarce he asked? Scarily scarce! The work force has been 80000 growing and we have comfortably absorbed 70000 the growth Net annual change in the New Zealand 60000 working age population 50000 What happens when the 40000 forecast retraction in the working age population 30000 starts? 20000 10000 0 1989 2013 2037 1977 1979 1981 1983 1985 1987 1991 1993 1995 1997 1999 2001 2003 2005 2007 2009 2011 2015 2017 2019 2021 2023 2025 2027 2029 2031 2033 2035 2039 2041 2043 2045 2047 2049 -10000 -20000 Source: Statistics New Zealand, Global Career Link analysis
  9. More frightening is bigger and richer economies feeling the same pain Foreign countries are going to have their own labour force contractions – and they are going to be competing for our talent – which has a tendency to take flight
  10. Yep it will be that NZI ad all over again with foreigners nicking our talent – thought Mr Global
  11. So how far short of working age people are we over the next 40 years – only 1.1million people Enough to fill Eden Park a few times over that is for sure – but peanuts in the global scheme of things
  12. So what can New Zealand do about this… nick some of our talent back We have HALF A MILLION Diaspora living overseas we need to convince them to come back or get them to tell those sitting next to them at work to
  13. But our own Diaspora doesn’t know our countries employers anymore KIWIS OVERSEAS THAT KNOW KIWIS OVERSEAS THAT KNOW ABOUT CORPORATES HIRING ABOUT SMEs HIRING Nothing Very Little Nothing Very Little Some More than average Some More than average Lots Lots Results of Global’s job sourcing survey show that Kiwi’s overseas know little about who is hiring in New Zealand Source: Global Career Link analysis
  14. What are we doing about it?
  15. We need your voice to help us... Just follow the link to sign up and show you care http://tinyurl.com/kiwis-who-care We need 20,000 voices to raise this to the highest level in the Government, rally the countries leaders, and keep you the caring informed and involved
