The task is to tie an artificial fly (wooly bugger).
The materials you need is a size 8 fly tying hook, fly tying kit, hackle, yarn, fly tying string ( black ), and tail feathers. Any of these materials can be bought at Cabelas.
Tying a Wooly Bugger for dummies. I'm going to show you how to tie a Wooly Bugger the right way. Fly tying is a great hobby for fisherman and you need a fly rod to use the flies.
First grab an eight size fly hook and place the curved end of the hook in the clamp tightly. Make sure the straight part of the hook is parallel to the table.
Now wrap the string tightly around the hook while holding the other end. wrap the string all the way to the eye of the hook then all the way to the back to the part just before the hook starts to bend. Cut the sting that you are holding onto off.
Now cut off some strands of feather near the top of the feather with the scissors that come in the fly tying kit. Next, tie the feathers down on top of the hook.
Now tie some yarn at the same place where you tied on the tail.
Next pluck a feather of hackle off the patch of feathers. Shave the strands of feather off of the top of the feather. Tie the shaved part of the feather on the top of the hook.
Wrap the string to the eye of the hook. Now wrap the yarn tightly and close together so the hook doesn't show all the way to the eye. Wrap the string tightly around the end of the yarn to the hook. Cut of any yarn past the place where you tied the yarn down.
Next wrap the hackle on top of the yarn like a candy cane all the way to the eye of the hook. Make sure the wraps are evenly spaced. After you tie the end down and cut off the extra feather.
Finally you need to tie the knot so everything stays in place. Wrap the the string once around your finger and then slip the loop off your finger onto the hook. Repeat the knot three more times then cut the string off as close as you can get to the hook. Don't cut off the hook.
There are many different types of flies that catch different kinds of fish. This is one of the most simplest flt that there is. I think fly tying is a great hobby for anyone. You need to by a fly rod so you can use the fly.
