• CONCLUSION:Irvingia gabonensis administered 150 mg twice daily beforemeals to overweight and/or obese human volunteersfavorably impacts body weight and a variety of parameterscharacteristic of the metabolic syndrome. This is the firstdouble blind randomized placebo controlled clinical trialregarding the anti-obesity and lipid profile modulatingeffects of an Irvingia gabonensis extract. The positiveclinical results, together with our previously publishedmechanisms of gene expression modulation related to keymetabolic pathways in lipid metabolism, provide impetusfor much larger clinical studies. Irvingia gabonensis extractmay prove to be a useful tool in dealing with the emergingglobal epidemics of obesity, hyperlipidemia, insulinresistance, and their co-morbid conditions.

• Effect on body compositionIrvingia gabonensis induced a decrease in weightof 2.91 ± 1.48% (p < 0.0001) after two weeks and5.6 ± 2.7% (p < 0,0001) after one month.Although the percentage of body fat was notsignificantly reduced with both placebo and IG,the waist circumference (5.07 ± 3.18%; p <0.0001) and hip circumference (3.42 ± 2.12%; p <0,0001) were significantly reduced by IG. Areduction of 1.32 ± 0.41% (p < 0.02) and 2.23 ±1.05% (p < 0.05) was observed with the placeboafter two and four weeks respectively oftreatment.
• Effect on blood lipids componentsThe plasma total cholesterolcencentration was reduced by 39.21%,triglyerides by 44.9% (p < 0,05) and LDLby 45.58%. This was accompanied by asignificant increase in HDL-cholesterol of46.852%. The CT/HDL ratio (p < 0.05) andthe blood glucose level were alsoreduced (32.36%; p < 0.05). • CONCLUSIONSThis preliminary study suggests that ,a proprietaryseed extract of Irvingia gabonensis (150 mg), whentaken twice per day for a 10-week period has theability to significantly decrease body fat,bodyweight, and waist circumference in overweightindividuals. Furthermore, Irvingia gabonensis hasdemonstrated favorable affects on severalmetabolic parameters associated with insulinresistance, a characteristic of metabolic syndrome.The authors of this study suggest that “Irvingiagabonensis may be a helpful adjunct in themanagement of overweight and/or obesity.”
