Geography • Is the study of the Earth and the relationships between it and people. • The word geography is composed of two words: • geo, which means earth, • Graph, which means description or drawing. • It can be said that through geography we learn where and how places are. • It helps explain the reason for their names and how people and animals live in different ways.

  5. 5. Globe Oceans • Great expanses of water that cover most of the Earth’s surface. From largest to smallest they are: • Pacific Ocean (occupies almost one third of Eath’s surface) • Atlantic Ocean • IndianOcean • Antartic Ocean • Artic Ocean Continents • Great expansions of land surrounded by water. There are six continents: • America • Europe • Africa • Asia • Oceania • Antartica

Map • Is a drawing that represents the Earth, or part of it, on a flat surface such as a sheet of paper. • Because of maps we can easily locate place and not get lost • They also serve to show different information about places. • Cartography, is the technique used to make maps. • Is derived from the word chart, another word for map. Long ago maps were known as navigation charts.
