  • 1. Application  for  the  Master  in  Management  at  IE  University       Giulia  Bloise   GREEN  STEPS  FOR  A  GREENER  TOWN     Analysis  and  proposals  for  a  sustainable  lifestyle
  • 2. “The Nation behaves well if it treats its natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired, in value.”   - Theodore Roosevelt 2
  • 3. BEFORE  WE  START…     Inspired  by  the  question  about  sustainable  development,  I  decided  to  come  back  to   my  town,  to  which  I  have  always  been  so  attached,  to  investigate  the  situation.   So,    equipped  with  my  reAlex  camera,  I  explored  different  areas  and  interviewed   some  inhabitants  to  better  understand  the  issues  linked  to  the     environmental  pollution.     It  has  been  a  great  occasion  to  be  closer  to  my  hometown  and  to  put  light  on  what  is   right,  what  is  wrong  and  what  should  be  improved.         3   Giulia   Bloise
  • 4. CASTROVILLARI   Castrovillari  is  a  relatively  small  town  in  the  South  of  Italy.     It  is  the  reference  point  for  all  the  surrounding  villages,  since  it  offers  the  main   facilities:  hospital,  schools,  public  ofAices.     4   Giulia   Bloise
  • 5. Actually,  regarding  sustainable  development,  not  much  has  been  done   in  the  past.  Just  in  the  last  few  years  something  started  to  move  in  the   recycling  direction.       Starting  from  2010,  the  Airst  plan  for  separate  collection  of  rubbish  has   5   been  put  in  place,  with  the  introduction  of  3  to  5  garbage  can  per  different   area…     Giulia   Bloise
  • 6. …but  the  lifestyle  of  the  inhabitants  seems  not  to  Ait  perfectly  with  this  idea.     6   Giulia   Bloise
  • 7. On  the  one  hand,  the  lack  of  information  and  of  a  strong  background   culture  about  sustainable  development  has  made  the  transition  to  recycling   a  very  difAicult  one.   7   Giulia   Bloise
  • 8. On  the  other  hand,  the  lack  of  organisation  of  the  government  in  handling  the   recycling  cycle  has  brought  the  most  socially  engaged  citizen  to  create   artistic  ways  to  accomplish  their  duties,  while  leaving  the  others  the  freedom   of  using  the  streets  as  garbage  can.         8   Giulia   Bloise
  • 9. It’s  crystal  clear  that  a  change  of  direction  is  needed.     Starting  a  recycling  project  without  the  right  means   is  obviously  not  enough. 9   Giulia   Bloise
  • 10. First  of  all  we  should  start  by  cleaning  out  all  of  the  zones  with  excessive  and   abandoned   trash,   giving   back   to   children   those   green   area   in   which   they   used  to  play.       To  achieve  the  goal  of  an  efAicient  recycling  cycle,  we  should  appoint  a  waste   management  committee  in  charge  of  coordinating  all  of  the  operations,  from   collection  to  garbage  disposal.       10   Giulia   Bloise
  • 11. In  fact,  the  adequacy  of  the  garbage  dump  should  be  ampliAied,  since  too  many   times  garbage  collection  is  stopped  for  the  scarce  disposal  performances.     Moreover,   there   is   the   urge   of   implementing   systems   for   the   use  of  renewable  energy.     We   live   in   a   land   where   the   sun   is   always   present,   so   the   instalment   of   solar   panel   on   houses   and   on   industrial  plants  could  reduce  the  dependence  on  fossil  fuels,  thus  producing     electricity  with  a  limited  impact  on  environment.       11   Giulia   Bloise
  • 12. Additionally,  a  more  eco-‐friendly  way  of  transportation  should  be   implemented.       For  example,  no  trafAic  weekends  or  limited  trafAic  zones  (especially  in  the  city   centre)  could  be  useful  to  reduce  the  emission  of  carbon  dioxide,  as  much  as  some   policy  to  encourage  the  acquisition  of  electric  vehicles  (like  exemption  from   parking  fees  or  more  freedom  of  circulation).     12   Giulia   Bloise
  • 13. Of  course,  for  a  small  town  with  no  experience  in  the  renewable  sector,  all  of   these  changes  could  seem  too  much.  Starting  from  primary  education,  schools   should  promote  “green  days”  during  which  children  will  be  brought  in  the   streets  to  pick  up  the  trash  or  in  green  parks  to  learn  about  nature  and  how  to   respect  it.           So,  by  teaching  to  small  children  how  to  apply  the  three  basic  principles  for  a   greener  world,  we  can  aspire  to  achieve  very  satisfactory  results  and   hopefully  become  an  example  for  our  neighbours.   13   Giulia   Bloise
