1. 2012 AAU 5th Grade Girls Basketball National
Date: June 24 - 29. Location: Franklin, Tennessee Suburb of Nashville, TN
The Memphis Future Stars girls finished 9th in 2012 AAU 5th Grade Girls Basketball National
Championship. The tournament consisted of 32 teams from across the nation. The girls went
undefeated (3-0) in bracket play and only lost 1 game in the championship bracket falling short of the
elite 8. The girls finished 4th in 2012 5th Grade Girls AAU State Division I to qualify for the nationals. The
Memphis Future Stars team actually consists of 4th grade and 5th grade girls.
This young girls’ basketball team was birth out of THE BLVD church four years ago under the coaching
staff of Cassandra Price and Glenda Jones, and was known then as the Memphis Spirits. The Memphis
Future Stars Girls was formed in 2010 after joining the Futures Stars organization. The current coaching
staff is Cassandra Carter-Price and Helen Darling, with organization founder, Orlando Tot.
In a city that’s dominated by boys’ basketball, there is very little fundamental basketball training for girls
in the primary grades, the age when they are most impressionable and open for development. Our goal
is to increase the awareness of girls’ basketball with the hopes of boosting self-esteem and contributing
to a healthy lifestyle. With adding an additional girl team this year, our biggest challenges are securing
gym practice times, additional coaches and financial support. Team information can be found at
www.memphisfuturestars.com .
Congratulations to the Memphis Future Stars Girls!
