Rednano - The Decision For Selecting Partner - Technology - Presentation Transcript
rednano.sg - A premier local and directory search engine
Who Are We?
• A joint venture between 2 media powerhouses :
Singapore Press Holdings and Schibsted ASA
(Norway-based media group)
• Schibsted successfully launched local search engine,
www.sesam.no in Norway (2005)
• Also launched local search engine, www.sesam.se
in Sweden (2006)
• SPH Search wants to replicate sesam’s success in
Singapore
What Do We Offer?
Key element of our offering:
local information

Our Technology Platform
• Weare very open-source based, running on
• Linux
• Java + latest application frameworks
• Apache
• MySQL / Postgres
• Tomcat
Our Technology Needs
• We run 24 x 7
• A constant predictable uptime
• A constant predictable performance
• Easily deployable apps across
servers
• Apps MUST scale linearly with
business needs
• Sync data content across multiple
serves instaneously
Why Cloud Computing
Technology?
• Sync computing needs with business uptake
(linear scaling)
• Cross-platform (independence from hardware,
OS) – must be Java-enabled
• Database and OS independence – so these
solutions are questionable
• All updates at Java object levels must sync across
entire clusters (middleware consideration)
• Possibility of ASP-like cloud computing in the
future (eg. Amazon’s GoGrid, SCS’s Alatum)
Why Gigaspaces?
• Proven, ahead of the pack
• Stable
• Growing pool of customers in Singapore
• Most important – support
• Technology platform is very supportive of
Java Spring framework
• Easy portability of existing Java codes
over to Gigaspaces
• Good management tool that eases
deployment and produce good reports

Topic - The 24X7 nature of an online business demands an application framework that can provide:
• a constant predictable uptime
• a constant predictable performance
• switch applications on / off across a cluster of load-balanced servers, thereby easing deployment
• scale linearly with the business needs quickly
• sync data content across multiple servers instantaneously
The current n-tier infrastructure framework put in place in a lot of data centers has provided scalability, failover, clustering only at the machine level. This is not sufficient at the application level which demands failover at objects level. Preservation and synchronization of sessions' content across servers becomes important. This is exactly what Cloud Computing is good at achieving.
