Social Status By: Giavanna W & Sarah M.
Social Status: Is the standing one holds in society based on prestige. It is also affected by a number of factors such as occupation, wealth, education, and family background. rich poor
How it affects teens: Social status effects teens with how there parents are living; wealthy teens to seem have less social problems then poor teens due to all the stress they have on there lives. This can also effect there school life with missing days and not doing well.
Research: CareerBuilder.com asked over 6,000 full-time workers to categorize their high school personas in one of the following groups: student government, athlete, geek, honor society, cheerleaders, drama club, teachers pet or class clown. These personalities were then compared to job level, salary, industry and job satisfaction… “Thirty nine percent of workers age 30 and older said their high school experience had influence on the job they hold today”. Cheerleaders were more likely to hold a vice president role than any other persons, according to the survey.
Reasons to choosing this topic: We chose this topic because we wanted to see how social cliques and social status effects how people act in school and how it effects everyone. We wanted to know how if everyone thought our school has social clique problems just like the media explodes for having.
Do you think there is a social status in our school?
      Are you in a clique?
Does being popular make you a fake person?
In order to survive in high school, do you think you need to be in the top of the social ladder?
Would you change your looks and how you act to become popular?
Do you think people only hangout with people who dress and act the same as them?
Do people discriminate others if there not wearing the new fashion trends?
Results: The results we got from the survey were same in some way how Twisted was, but mostly different. In Twisted, there was a lot of cliques and social classes but in West we feel we don’t have a problem with cliques, but sometimes they can be a problem when someone is in danger. Also they relate to how the higher class usually picks on the lower class, just like Chip and Tyler
Handing out surveys: When we looked through the surveys they showed that many people didn’t have a problem with social status but the research that we found other schools do have a problem with social status. Our research did show though that our school does have a problem with peoples style.
Twisted In the book twisted Tyler is the average kid with the family who has problems and is just getting by to survive. Bethany is the rich, popular girl who Tyler has a crush on in the story. Social status is used in the book Twisted a lot, It shows how rich people can get away with a lot more things than poor people can. People look up to rich people more than poor, because it is believed that rich people have more power in a society. Bethany was looked up to because of her social status, Tyler wasn’t because he just blended in with the others.
Tyler: Not wealthy Average kid Blended in with the other kids Wanted to be popular Saw Bethany as a “god” because of her social status Changed his clothes for other people Did things that wasn’t him to try and become popular
Bethany: Wealthy Popular Can get whatever she wants Loved by most Always noticed Everyone wants to be her friend Top of the social status in high school and in society with the help of her dad.
