  • Design Principles for PowerPoint Presentations If you must use PPT
  • Simplicity
      • Words should be simplified unless using technical terms.
      • Figures are easier to read than tables
      • Background design should be consistent and not distract from message
  • Organization
    • Presentations should have
      • a title slide and introduction
      • A summary slide and acknowledgements
      • Presentations longer than 20 slides should have a summary slide every 7-10 slides
  • Visibility
      • Colour should be used to create contrast
      • Use dark text on a light background for presentations delivered on a projector.
  • Readability
      • Use non-serif fronts such as Arial or Verdana
      • Minimum font size = 24 point
      • Maximum of 7 lines per slide, 7 words per line
      • Avoid CAPITALIZING all text
      • Italicize rather than underline
  • Use of Effects
      • Avoid over use of transition effects
      • Slide transitions should be consistent through out.
      • Transition text from left to right
      • Graphics should precede text
  • Presentation
      • Don’t read the presentation from the slides
      • Highlight information by fading
      • Look at your audience not the presentation
