  • 1. Conduct your own research and find:  Release Date 27th June 2005 - us 19th June 2005 - uk  Budget $132m  Box Office Gross $234m Read the following articles: http://www.today.com/id/10549050/ns/today-entertainment/t/steven- spielbergs-obsession/#.UuZWe2TFJ1M http://www.theguardian.com/film/2005/jul/04/usa.world Why do you think American audiences responded to War Of The Worlds like they did? Think about the casting of Tom Cruise, the film’s location and time of release. The American audiences responded to War Of The Worlds like they did because it stars successful and popular actor Tom Cruise and young up and coming actress Dakota Fanning. This cast makes people want to watch the film as it had an A-List actor starring in it. The film is set in America and was released just under 4 years after 9/11. The American audience would then want to watch the film because it had relations to the 9/11 attack on America in September 2001.
  • 2. Do you think the contemporary remake of War Of The Worlds would have been popular or successful without the events of 9/11? How do you feel about American Producers using 9/11 as a thematic device in film? Can it be justified? I don’t think the contemporary remake of War Of The Worlds would have been popular or successful without the events of 9/11. This is because there are certain elements to the film that showed the impact of 9/11. These are such things like Rachel, the young girl, seeing all the bodies float past her in the lake. This is just like all of the young children seeing people jumping from the twin towers that was broadcasted all over the year. Another point in the film is when Ray (Tom Cruise) lets go of his son and watches him run towards the fire, relating to the young men leaving their families to join the army after September 11th 2001. I don’t agree with the producers of the film using 9/11 as a thematic device in War Of The Worlds because they are only interested in the profit they will make from the film, not taking into consideration the feelings of the Americans affected by the event. I also agree with the producers as well because I think it’s important to remember 9/11 and the effects it had worldwide. Even though it was a tragic event, it will tell the story for people in years to come.
